was very nice.”
Nice was clearly the default term when a vanilla person didn’t understand what they were sensing in a relationship.
“You’re going to like Maverick. He’s very nice.” And had a wonderfully dirty mind that went well with his ability to multitask.
That earned me a happy sigh. “I’m so glad you found someone nice.”
I had to fight the urge to laugh at that one. “Thank you.”
Then she cleared her throat like it was time to get down to business. “When are you going to bring him home to meet me?”
Lord.
“Let me see where this goes first. I don’t want to rush him.” I winced when her sigh was more dramatic and judgmental that time.
“You’re ashamed of me?” That was her first blast, but she kept going. “I’m sure he won’t mind meeting your mother. They’re very family oriented. They like the way we organize our family units…or something like that. I can’t remember how he said it.”
I was betting it had a bit more subtext than she’d picked up on and that was part of why she couldn’t remember the exact words.
“I’m not going to rush him.” I was going to stand my ground on that one.
“Yes, I can see us getting serious. He thinks my job is great and he’s the type who wants to settle down, but we’ve only been seeing each other for a short time.” The fact that he spent pretty much all his free time at my place wasn’t relative to the conversation, so I left that part out.
She huffed, seeming to realize it wasn’t the time to push. “Well, just know that as long as he treats you right, I’ll be very supportive. I’m sure he’s a lovely gentleman.”
“He is.” And thinking about how well Maverick treated me had me looking at the clock. “Listen, Mom, I have to go. I have a few calls to make that can’t wait. But I’ll talk to you this weekend.”
There was no point in telling her I was escaping work early to go hang out with Maverick. I’d never get her off the phone then.
“Alright. I know how busy you are.” She was angling to start a guilt trip, but I pretended not to notice.
“Thanks, Mom. Love you.” Disconnecting the call, I sighed and leaned back in my chair.
With anyone else I would have waited until we’d known each other a lot longer before even mentioning them to her, but Maverick just felt different. Something about him said long-term. I didn’t want to wake up planning our first anniversary and realizing I hadn’t mentioned it to her yet.
She’d kill me.
At least this way, no matter what happened, she couldn’t say I’d hidden him from her. There were just a few details she didn’t need to know…like how he spent every night at my place and that I was starting to have fantasies about getting a collar from him or that he’d hinted at wicked plans for our afternoon if I managed to get off work in time for his phone call later.
Little things that a mother just didn’t need to know.
Maverick hadn’t been exactly forthcoming with details on what he was planning, but from the excited sound in his voice, he was hoping I’d make it home on time.
The only thing I’d gotten out of him was that he’d seen it online and vaguely referred to browsing for research. He didn’t seem to need as much sleep as I did, so he played around online at night after he knocked me out with a fabulous orgasm.
I thought it was a pretty fabulous deal…I got plenty of orgasms and sleep and he got to look up naughty ways to put me to sleep.
But he’d also spent a ridiculous amount of time looking up information on nutrition for humans. Evidently I wasn’t getting enough vitamin C for his liking, so now I was eating an orange every morning at breakfast. I was hoping that being good and getting my vitamins would lead to more orgasms, but I hadn’t seen a correlation yet.
The office was quiet, so heading out early wasn’t difficult once I got past my snickering office manager who couldn’t seem to decide whether she approved of my taking the afternoon off or not. She liked being in control where I couldn’t mess with her system, but she also didn’t approve of laziness.
So it was a toss-up, but I won when I hinted that I might start looking for another office assistant. She’d been pushing for almost six
