of them both. But Severn was still inside Konstantin’s beautiful eyes. Because Severn was Konstantin, and always had been.
Love swelled Mikhail’s heart, unbidden and limitless, stronger than ever.
He eased his grip, careful not to force this, and leaned so close that his mouth hovered over Konstantin’s. A moment passed, another, and it seemed as though the world held its breath along with Mikhail.
Konstantin’s warm lips brushed Mikhail’s, his tongue teased across Mikhail’s bottom lip, and then Mikhail fell into the kiss, savoring the true taste of the impossible demon he loved. His enemy. His lover. The only true thing in a world made of lies.
He kissed his demon in a starlit field and knew nothing would ever be the same again.
Chapter 35
Djall
When Luxen had told her Konstantin had fallen from Aerie with Mikhail in his arms, she didn’t believe him. When he’d said a pair of mated humans had blabbered to their neighbors, boasting they had two angels staying inside their quaint little cottage outside London, she refused to consider one of those angels was her brother. But what other angel would lodge with humans?
Then a natural disaster had befallen the stronghold of Haven—a storm so full of rage it had shattered their glass sanctuary—rattling the feathered assholes from Aerie to investigate, and Djall wondered again about the two angels in a cottage in a field.
Now, hunkered in the grass outside the cottage, cloaked by night, she witnessed the horrifying truth.
Konstantin—wings restored—on his knees, embracing the butcher Mikhail in love, not hate. There was no blade in his hand, no intent to kill. The intent was obvious, and it had nothing to do with killing and everything to do with a different passion.
Her brother, in all his demon glory, looked at the enemy with love in his eyes.
She’d come to reason with him, but when she’d first approached the cottage, a third demon had stood outside the little building with Mikhail and Konstantin. Djall had silently landed out of sight and crept through the high grass. When the unknown demon left, Djall had moved in, staying low and silent. If she could just get Konstantin alone…
And then she’d witnessed the impossible, Konstantin shedding his wretched angel-skin in front of the guardian.
He’d lied about not being able to shake off the illusion, and he’d lied about wanting to stop Mikhail. The abundance of sexual ether smoking off the pair did not lie. Konstantin was hopelessly in love.
He was the traitor they’d all feared him to be.
Djall lowered her gaze, unable to watch any more.
Luxen would not be pleased. Konstantin had convinced him he was thoroughly on the side of the demonkind. He’d lied to the High Lord in the worst possible way—with sex. For Luxen to have missed the ruse was a slight against his concubi prowess. He would not stand for it. If he saw Konstantin with Mikhail, he’d kill Konstantin.
And her stupid brother, so deeply distracted by the guardian, wouldn’t see the attack coming.
She had to separate them, by any means, for Konstantin’s own good. He’d thank her eventually, when this ridiculous infatuation with the guardian had passed. Get him away from the angels, and he’d retake his place as Lost Lord of the Red Manor. Red Manor would be strong again, strong enough to snatch control from Luxen. And Konstantin would lead all demons to victory.
She melted back into the shadows and sent a silent prayer to the demon lord Aerius, asking for guidance. As she did, silent movement in the night sky caught her eye. Stars blinked, and briefly, starlight framed the unmistakable silhouette of Luxen’s wings.
No!
How had he known…?
That sly bastard had followed her.
And he wasn’t alone.
She had to act now. Before Luxen witnessed the same of Konstantin as she had. She had to protect Red Manor and her last remaining blood-brother.
Freeing the whip from her hip, she spied Mikhail through the swaying grass, his wings a vast, feathered target for her whip’s vicious spike.
Konstantin would hate her, but one day he’d understand and thank her for destroying this forbidden love before it destroyed him.
Konstantin and Mikhail’s journey continues in the final book, Infernal Sin.
