A Crown Of Smoke And Ash - Sloane Murphy Page 0,112
to be sorry for my dear. Silas acted appallingly, and I told him as much. Stupid man needs to leave his hatred in the past.”
“That’s one thing he needs to do,” Tristan mutters under his breath.
“Well, I, for one am glad he isn’t here. Now I get to pepper the beautiful Remington about what on earth she sees in our little brother,” Louis grins, and Kain groans, rolling his eyes.
“Well, this will be fun.”
Breakfast ended up being hilarious. Kain was right, I had nothing to worry about, his family, his father excluded, were lovely and so welcoming. So many stories about Kain when he was younger. Always the serious one. It’s easy to see how he was the one to take up the mantle from his grandfather rather than his dad. Just another thing his dad is bitter about of course.
We’ve been walking through the grounds since then, enjoying the sunny day, even with the brisk air. With Halloween just around the corner, everyone is all kinds of excited here, especially the children. The one night of the year they can pretend to be vampires, and be among the humans easily.
“You have no need to be so nervous, mon amour,” Kain soothes me as we head towards his war room. It’s where we’re meeting his Generals to go through what we’ve learnt so far, and to try and get them on board with us. Kain seems confident, but me, not so much. The rift between Dracul and Hunter is wide, and despite the fact that this threat may eventually come for all of us, they may not see it as their problem, especially since we have the other two factions on side already.
My plan is to try and go for the unity approach. To reunite the factions to a time of peace, and this being the first step towards that, but we don’t have the Hunters on board yet, which I already anticipate Alexandra bringing up, and annoyingly I don’t have an answer for her when she does.
Not yet anyway. Maybe I’ll pull some sort of magic out of my ass when the question is upon us, for maybe Kain will have some magic words to placate her. The truth of it is, the Hunters are going to be the hardest sell, even with the evidence we now have about their actions. Especially without overthrowing the council.
Now there’s an idea.
I tuck it away for later musings and focus on my current reality. Especially since the last time I saw these guys was just before I rode Kain like a crazed nympho last night.
Awesome.
“They will sense your unease, mon coeur, is there anything I can do to help?” Kain asks, the sincerity in his eyes slays me. I swore I wouldn’t be embarrassed, and yet here I am, doing exactly that.
“I’ll be fine when we get in there, just getting it all out now.” We round the corner of the hall, and climb down the stairs at the far end to the war room. I take a deep breath as he opens the door and ushers me inside.
The room is empty, and I let out the breath I was holding. “They’re not here?”
“It would appear not, but then, not even Luc is here, so maybe they were held up. Let’s sit and wait for a few moments before we send out a party to find them.” He sits at the head of the table, and signals for me to sit to his left. I still feel like pacing, but I’d rather be sitting when people get here rather than looking like a crazy person, pacing around the room, so I sit.
Seconds later, the door opens, and six of them filter into the room with a round of apologies. “It’s my fault really. One of the girls needed my attention before I left,” Alexandra says, while sneering at me.
“Completely understandable, let’s not delay any further shall we. Please, sit.” Kain motions to them, and they sit, Luc to his right, while Alaric takes the seat next to me. Danerius leers at me across the table, and I try not to pay attention, because offending him right now isn’t something I want to do.
“That was quite a show you put on last night,” Alexandra purrs, looking directly at Kain, crossing her arms to accentuate her already considerable curves. I roll my eyes while Luc tries not to laugh opposite me.
“I didn’t realize you were there,” Kain says, and her face drops.
