A Crown Of Smoke And Ash - Sloane Murphy Page 0,111
only been a few days, I guess I can’t be surprised. Even if everything here seems to be moving at a hundred miles an hour.
I finish getting dressed, and pull on my boots as Kain emerges from the closet, looking more casual than usual, a pair of dark jeans with a black shirt, the arms rolled up. I’m not used to casual Kain, but holy fuck, he can come out to play more often. His eyes glitter as he takes in my hungry stare, and he smiles.
“Later, mon amour. We have much to do today. Especially if we are to leave tomorrow.”
“I know,” I pout a little. “I’m sorry we’re not here longer.”
“It is fine. We will be back soon, I am sure. We have lifetimes together yet.” I stand and move over to him, wrapping my arms around his waist, and hold him close. He wraps his arms around me, and I sigh as I take in his warmth.
“I suppose we should get this show on the road.” I say, my nerves flooding me.
“It will be fine. Do not worry, they will love you.” He kisses the top of my head, and leads the way down to the chambers his family have.
Their chambers are like a house, they have their own living areas, kitchen, bedrooms, or so Kain explains on the walk down. He opens the door before us and there is so much commotion.
“Oh my boy! There you are.” A woman, who I can only assume is his mom, rushes to him, and hugs him tight.
“The favorite has arrived!” a man, the spitting image of Kain, except his eyes are a dark honey color, calls out as he enters the room.
“We guessed,” the next voice says as two others join us.
“Shut up, Adam.” Kain laughs when his mom finally lets him go.
“And you must be Remy.” The woman turns to me, and I take her in. Her long dark hair, and warm honey eyes, the huge smile on her face, and yet there is a frailty about her. She rushes to me, and hugs me as tightly as she hugged Kain. “It is so nice to finally meet you dear.”
“It’s nice to meet you too, Mrs. Michaels,” I say and she scoffs.
“Oh, please. Call me Christina. No titles needed here. These three idiots over here are my other sons, Adam, Louis, and Tristian.” I wave at them awkwardly, and Kain grins.
“Remy has met a lot of people in the last few weeks, as you can tell, her social skills are growing.” They chuckle, and I flip him the bird discreetly. I mean, he’s not wrong. I’ve been so on recently, I’m running out of steam. But I can keep it up for a little longer, so I smile and take the ribbing.
“Please come through, breakfast will be here any second.” Christina ushers us all through to the dining room, and I take a seat beside Kain, his mom on his other side, and Tristian next to me. The spot at the bottom of the table empty, I assume for his father.
“I understand you knew my Ethan,” Christina says softly, and Kain’s brothers’ heads whip towards me.
“I did, briefly. He was a good friend. I am so sorry for what happened,” I tell her softly, and her eyes glisten.
“It is not your fault dear, from what I hear, you tried to save him, and suffered enough for doing so. I will not ask you to suffer any further.” She pats my hand from across the table, and I can practically see the questions on his brothers faces. They’re each older than Kain, so they would have known Ethan, I remember him once mentioning Tristian being the eldest, but I don’t remember much more than that. Kain shakes his head, and I can tell questions will come later, but for now, they let it drop.
I sit and take in their family dynamic, everything is so easy and carefree at the table, and they very obviously love each other very much.
A young girl enters the room, and plates are placed before us. “Thank you, Eva.” Christina says with a soft smile, and the girl leaves.
“Father isn’t joining us?” Kain asks his mother, and she shakes her head.
“No, I told him last night that if he couldn’t behave himself then not to bother showing his face. As you can see, he made his decision.”
“I’m sorry.” I hang my head, the last thing I want is to come between their family.
