A Crown Of Smoke And Ash - Sloane Murphy Page 0,113
coeur. I’m used to her games.
I’ve never been more thankful for our bond.
“Now then, shall we get down to business.” Nods all round as Kain takes the lead in the room, this is his show after all. “As you all know from our brief previous discussions, we have discovered that our rogues, at least a good amount of them, have been recruited. We are yet to discover who by, but we are working on it.”
I watch in awe as he becomes the leader he has always been before my eyes. He stands, and walks around the top of the room. His hands alternating between in his pockets or animated. He lays out everything we’ve gone through what feels like a dozen times, what we have found out so far, and what our planned next steps are.
“And what of the Hunters?” Alexandra asks, and it takes all of my strength to keep my mouth closed and not roll my eyes.
“The Hunters are our last battle. Remy is here to show you her willing, we have Leviathan on our side too, the Hunters will fall into line one way or another.”
“Yes, but one Hunter and an Angel, isn’t an entire faction.”
“There might not be any factions to argue with if we can’t all get our shit together,” I huff. I’ve just about had enough of her and her shitty attitude. “If you don’t want to join us, then don’t. But if we fail, because those we asked to help us didn’t come through, who is going to be there to help you when the threat comes for you and your way of life? Because it sure as shit isn’t going to just stop when it’s done what it wants with me and mine.”
Silence fills the room, and Luc and Kain both beam at me. The others look pretty shocked at my outburst, I have tried to keep myself in check in the time we’ve been here, but Alexandra almost looks impressed.
“I wondered when you’d come out to play for real.” She smirks, raising an eyebrow at me. “So what is your plan?”
“I don’t know yet,” I tell her honestly. “I started all of this because I fell in love. Several times over. Everything else has honestly been a snowball rushing downhill, with me chasing it trying not to fall flat on my face. But Marie Laveau herself told me I need allies for what is to come, that every person would be necessary. That’s what I know. So I’m doing the only thing I can think of, while trying to overthrow the tyranny and bigotry of the factions.”
They look at me almost dumbfounded by my honesty, and Kain just smirks as he stands there, his hands in his pockets, looking hot as shit, but now is not the time to get distracted.
“I guess we all have a lot to think about,” Danerius says, and they stand, leaving Luc and I seated. “We will let you know our decisions by sundown.”
The others nod, and they all file out of the room.
“Well, that could have gone worse,” Luc says leaning back in his chair.
“It could’ve gone better too,” I counter, and Kain sits down, taking my hand in his.
“It went as well as I imagined. Now all we can do is wait, and prepare to go home. Luc, I want you to stay here for now, gather your clan here so that we can move you quickly if needed. With the Witches on side, portals will be available, and if we can have everyone in one place it will be easier.”
“Consider it done. I’ll make sure the armory is fully stocked too so that we’re prepared.”
“Thank you,” Kain says before standing. “Now then, my afternoon just freed up, and I know exactly how I want to spend it.
He pulls me from the chair and practically runs, pulling me behind him, and I can’t help but laugh when I realize the direction we’re running to.
His… I mean, our bedroom.
His laugh sounds out around me, and I love how free he sounds. He obviously isn’t worried about the General’s decisions, and so I won’t be. I trust him, and I trust that he knows his people. That he picked them well.
He picks me up when we reach the bottom of the stairwell, and he flashes us to the top.
“Do you like my wicked plan, mon amour?”
“Very much so.” I nod as he carries me across the threshold of the room and throws me on the bed.
