Maddie whispers in my ear, squeezing me a little tighter. I guess Creek’s resistance about coming here with Nirvana wasn’t as unknown as I thought. I squeeze her back, not saying a thing, aware that Nirvana is only a few feet from us.
“So, the story is coming from you then right, Remy?” Nirvana grins once her mom lets me go.
“Nirvana, go wash up. Dinner will be on the table in a moment.”
Nirvana rolls her eyes at her mom’s words but runs upstairs to wash up.
“Thank you,” Creek says to her as we move into the dining room.
“Have you two decided on a story?” Nate asks as he sits at the head of the table.
“As close to the truth as I can,” I tell him with a smile. Creek sits beside his dad, and I leave the seat next to him for Nirvana, taking the seat that will put me between her and Maddie. Maddie brings the roast over to the table and my mouth waters. It smells just like home.
Nirvana bounces into the room and takes the seat between me and her brother. She fidgets in her seat until her mom sits down and everyone starts plating up their food. The minute we start to eat the questions begin, and I tell her as much as I can about how Creek and I ended up together, without giving tons away, and also, without mentioning the three other guys I ended up with. We’ll tell her eventually, just not yet. It’s too hard to explain it all, and she’s so young, I think if I gave her ideas, Nate would have a conniption.
“So, when do I get a niece or nephew? I’ve always thought I’d make a kick ass aunt!” She squeals with pure excitement, and Creek just about chokes on his food.
“Nirvana!” Maddie admonishes her. “You never ask those questions. A person’s choice to bring another life into this world is none of your business.”
“Sorry Mom,” Nirvana says, her head dropping. “I was just excited.”
“It’s fine, Nirvana,” I say, patting her arm while Nate and Creek sit a little shell shocked across from us. “Babies aren’t on the horizon for us just yet, we’re just enjoying the fact that we’ve finally found each other.”
“What she said,” Creek grumbles, before shoving more food in his mouth so he doesn’t have to speak about kids. Fate knows that’s not a conversation I’m ready for, all things considered. Though with Maddie’s outburst, I wonder if Creek told her about the baby I lost. I assume she already knew about the human child I had, and the lives I was kept in the dark, considering how close she was to my mom. I shrug off that thought trail, because I don’t want to go down the rabbit hole of pity party for one.
“Tell us more about school!” I say to Nirvana. “What’s new with you?”
“School’s okay, same old really. Though, a new girl did start last month, and she seems super nice.” She grins at me, but I can’t help the spike of panic that comes with it. I look over to Creek and I see the same fear reflected back at me. “Also, I have a boyfriend now, so that’s new.”
It’s Nate’s turn to choke on his food, while Maddie giggles. “You have a boyfriend? How come this is the first time I’m hearing about it?”
“Because if I’d told you when it was just the three of us, you and Dad would have ganged up on me, but Remy’s here and I know she’s got my back.” Nirvana grins and I can’t help but chuckle, while Creek goes all big brother on her.
“Who, exactly, is this boyfriend?” Creek asks, folding his arms across his chest, while Nirvana rolls her eyes at him.
“You see?” she says to me, exasperated. “He’s just a guy in my year, he’s super nice. His brother raised him, but he works a lot hence the boarding school. Their parents died a while back.”
My stomach sinks as she keeps talking. It has to be a coincidence, there’s no fucking way.
“What’s his name?” Nate asks and Nirvana huffs at him.
“I don’t know why that matters, you guys aren’t going to know him.” She folds her arms, much like her brother and I hold my breath. “His name is Dylan Dotoro.”
