Fork versus Team Jojo and Fork’ll win if he joins my team.”
“Roger that. And okay,” Pippa smirked. “If you need reinforcements, you let me know.”
“Or a getaway car,” Gianna added.
I put my index finger to my nose. We all laughed.

Gianna and Jesse headed out somewhere and so did Pippa and Spencer. I was on the couch texting with my friend in New York, and found myself alone, other than Bick and Nolan, who were the only others hanging out.
Stubbs came into the lounge with a backpack slung over his shoulder. I wasn’t sure whose room he’d stayed in, but he was getting ready to leave.
“Hey,” Stubbs said, catching my hand. “What do you say about me taking you out? You didn’t get the chance to answer.”
“I can’t, but thanks anyway.”
He pouted. “You interested in that singer from last night?”
I tried to decide how to answer.
“Not Fork?” he pushed.
I held my face in the same expression.
“Okay, well, none of my business if you don’t wanna say. Hope to see you around though.” He kissed my temple. “Hug?”
I gave him a hug. He tried to make it a close and intimate hug where I was patting his back in the ‘friend’ hug way.
“Be safe. No more gettin’ kidnapped or firebombed, okay, babe?” His hand ran up my back and then his fingers tangled into the length of my hair.
Okay, enough of this.
“Roger that,” I said, just about to pull away.
Christian picked that minute to walk in. He froze behind Stubbs who still had his arms around me and a handful of my hair.
Stubbs let go and turned, colliding with Christian who stared down at him.
Stubbs looked over his shoulder at me. “All right. Got it. Loud ‘n clear,” he said. “Later brother,” Stubbs held his hand out for a handshake. “Loud ‘n clear, brother.”
Christian shook his hand, but his expression didn’t budge.
Stubbs chuckled with a shrug as if to say What can I do? before he waved at the prospects at the bar, winked at me, and left.
Christian’s glare was now on me.
I twirled around to give him my back and sashayed away. I felt him follow me. I couldn’t stop the smile that tugged at my lips.
Nolan and Bick were both still at the bar, and I didn’t look but would bet money their eyes would be on us until we were out of earshot and then the rumors would start flying.
I stopped at my room. He was still behind me. I turned just my head to look at him before sticking the key in the lock.
“Can I help you?”
“Get in the fuckin’ bedroom, Jojo,” he said low, under his breath.
Whoosh… that was the sound of my panties melting. I gave him a beaming smile and opened my door. He followed me, shutting it and locking it. His eyes swept over the space.
“Meow,” Marshmallow greeted from the end of the bed where she’d been snoozing.
He gave the sight of my room a disgusted eye sweep. “What a fuckin’ headache.”
“What?” I asked.
“Hot pink. Pink ‘n black leopard spots. And fuckin’ polka dots, too, baby? Too much.”
I put my arms around his waist and looked up at him with a beaming smile. “I don’t like neutral décor. Wait until you see how I decorate our place. Zebra. Giraffe print. A colorful safari.”
He looked at me like I was nuts.
“Movin’ too fast for you?” I joked.
He swallowed hard. “Sit down. Gotta talk to you.”
I reluctantly let go of him and backed up until the backs of my knees touched bed. I sat on the end beside my cat and ran my hand across her head. He looked over at my dresser, covered in framed photos of me and my brothers, Dad, my friends (both from Sioux Falls and pics with me and my brothers’ girlfriends), my cousins and aunts and uncles in a big picture from the last family reunion we went to in Colorado last year to see the rest of the Valentine clan. There were a lot of us. I saw his eyes sweep over my makeup table filled with my stuff and land on the big fuchsia ostrich feather arrangement fanned out on the wall above my headboard. His eyes then moved and took in the carpet between my bed and dresser, which was black with white and pink polka dots. My favorite bunny slippers sat there on the rug.
I also had a big wood print of my purple Harley on one wall, taken with a purple bow on it the
