with their arms folded across their chests.
“Where the fuck---” Dad started.
I put my hand up. It didn’t stop him from talking.
“---did you go? And you!” he snarled at Christian.
“I was headin’ out to swap out the batteries on the trail cams and she followed me and tried to lure me into the fuckin’ Reavers’ Inn. You’ll see us pass on the camera footage by the shed if you look. Didn’t get the batteries swapped so I’ll go back ‘n do it now. Bick! Ride with me. We’ll take the Expedition.”
Dad and Rider’s gazes both swung to me.
“Camera footage?” I asked.
“We have trail cams on the old Jackals property to get alerts if they show up,” Christian told me. “Motion sensor, no sound but films everything after the sensor is tripped. I get alerts on my phone if they’re tripped.”
Shit.
“Fork,” Dad bit off, clearly demanding more of an explanation.
“I stopped her and after a bunch of yellin’ convinced her to ride back here.”
“I didn’t know it was a Jackals bar,” I defended.
“The fuck is going on with the two of you?” Dad demanded. “And how does that bar translate to you takin’ her to that fuckin’ place?”
“Not a fucking thing is going on with us,” I snapped. “But if there were, it wouldn’t be either of your business unless we decided it was.”
Rider decided to weigh in. “Not our business? This club is under semi-lockdown, you’ve already almost been blown up before you got kidnapped and he had to take out two men to make sure you got outta there alive and not raped so how the fuck is this not our business? And if you’re fuckin’ around with my sister’s feelings, Fork…” Rider turned to Christian and put a finger in his chest.
Christian put both hands up. “Ride... I’m---”
“He’s not fucking around with me. I was trying to get his attention and I failed and I’m done, okay? Done.”
“It ain’t like you to be stupid,” my brother said. “The fuckin’ Reavers Inn?”
“I didn’t know what that place was. And hopefully I’m done bein’ stupid,” I said.
“Let’s go back to the beginning,” Dad said to Christian. “When did this start and how far has it gotten with you two?”
“No, Dad. Not your business. You wouldn’t ask any other member these kinds of questions.”
“I would if he was messin’ around with my daughter.”
“You don’t get to do this. You let my brothers do whatever the fuck they want. If something were happening with us, it would be up to us, but as there isn’t, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Now, I’m going to bed.”
“Wait. The two of you shouldn’t need to be reminded that we’re staying in pairs or bigger right now and what you two did tonight on the road doesn’t count. We’re on four wheels after dark and your Harley is supposed to be fuckin’ parked, Joelle.”
“Roger that,” I saluted and stormed down the hall, leaving him with my dad and brother.

Someone had leaned a thick yellow envelope against my bedroom door. I got into my room before I opened it. It was addressed to me with a local return address. Calendar samples from Jackson with a Post-It on the top one. It told me to brace because any businesses that bought advertising got a dozen early copies. Sturgis was around the corner.
It would be only a matter of days before the shit hit the fan with my brothers again over me being in that calendar. They’d been busy worrying about the fact that the Wyld Jackals had kidnapped me and about what would happen now that Alec Wylde was out of jail and networking with the Freebooters. Either the calendar thing had fallen off their radar, they decided it was a lost cause, or Alicia and Jackson Gale just really weren’t that intimidated.
I shoved it under my bed, plugged my phone in, and stared at my reflection in my mirror. God, Christian.
I kicked my boots off with exasperation before I climbed into bed and flicked on the TV. And then, I had a eureka moment. I texted Jenna.
SOS. Do you want to be my favorite future sister in
law?
Jenna: Duh. But how am I not already your
favorite?
Me: Set me up on a fake date with someone.
Me: Someone hot.
Jenna: When?
Me: ASAP. But make it clear it’s going absolutely
nowhere and it’s all for show.
Jenna: I like how you think. Consider it done. Txt
you back soon. #teamjojo
I stared into space for a few minutes and had a Part B to my eureka
