him.
“Fuck,” Jesse muttered.
“Crap,” I said.
Max hurried up to us, his face full of disbelief.
“Kissing? You’re fucking kissing?”
“We, uh…,” I stuttered.
“Fuck you, Max,” Jesse said. I was still cradling him like a baby, and suddenly it felt like the most awkward thing in the world. I couldn’t put him down on his leg, though. Jesse didn’t seem to notice, as he continued to rage at Max. “Yeah, I fucking kissed her. I fucked her, too! Look at her! She’s fucking amazing and if you’d spent the night locked up in a cabin, surrounded by a raging wildfire, you’d have fallen in love with her, too!”
I groaned as the rest of the guys began roaring with laughter.
Frenchie rushed up and took Jesse out of my arms and the others rushed up with a gurney, placing him on it as I stood in shock.
“He’s probably right,” Max said, laughing with the others.
“Can we just get him to a hospital, please?” I said, shaking my head.
I watched as the guys carried him away, knowing my life was never going to be the same.
Epilogue
One year later
Life definitely wasn’t the same after.
Lined up next to Jesse, Frenchie, Brick and Charlie fidgeted in their tux’s, but Jesse looked cool as a cucumber.
And the most handsome Fiona had ever seen him.
She held on tightly to her father’s arm as she locked eyes with Jesse and made her way down the aisle towards him. His eyes were serious and focused only on her, as he completely ignored his antsy friends.
He’d been focused on Fiona from the first day he’d met her and once she freed him from that fallen tree and carried him down the mountain, she’d never left his side.
During long nights in the hospital as he recovered from surgery, she was there.
During many months of frustratingly painful physical therapy sessions as he relearned how to walk, she was there.
No matter how exasperated he became on his long journey back, he always had Fiona to vent to. She held his hand, she lifted him up, she did whatever he needed.
And most of all, she understood the maddening irritation he was going through. A man addicted to adrenaline with no access to his drug of choice was not a happy man.
But she never wavered.
She founds ways to motivate him, to encourage him, and when warranted — she distracted him.
His leg was busted but the rest of his body worked perfectly well.
They made the best with what they had, coming up with innovative ways of making love and in the meantime — they took the time to get to know each other.
They’d jumped right into the fire with one another, blindly trusting their own instincts, but those instincts had proven to be right on target.
They were perfect for one another.
Fiona’s fiery spirit complimented Jesse’s undying passion and it was only inevitable that this day would finally come.
Fiona’s father kissed her on the cheek, handing her off to Jesse. Jesse beamed down at her, his leg fully healed now, as he took her hand in his.
She stood by his side as Frenchie began to speak.
“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join Jesse and Fiona in holy matrimony…”
They barely heard the words that followed, consumed by the inferno flowing between them.
When Jesse kissed Fiona, he knew the wildfire they’d started together would never be extinguished.
He vowed to himself to spend a lifetime stoking it.
They turned to their guests, raising their hands in victory, as the cheers of their friends and family erupted around them.
He grabbed her hand and they walked back down the aisle, their future as bright as flames.
