one.”
My stomach turns. How could anyone be fucked up enough to turn a person into something like that and keep trying?
“Anything else?”
“There’s notes on some of the patients.”
I hesitate. “Is there any mention of a Dani?”
His brows draw together, but then he nods. “I think so.” And his fingers fly over the keys, until he says, “Just this.”
I read it out loud, “Dani is unlikely to pass the tests, given her lack of size and strength. But X has insisted that something from her past makes her a good candidate. I mostly assume the patient will die, but I’ll begin the tests as requested.”
“That’s all?”
He seems disappointed. “Yeah, but I’m not done recovering files. I might find more later.”
I nod and head for the door, but then pause. “Let me know if you find out anything else.”
“Uh, Phoenix, sir?”
“Yes?”
“There was a mention of a liaison within the Immortal Hunters.”
I try to keep my face carefully blank. “What did you say your name was, son?”
He draws himself up taller. “Whiz, sir?”
“Whiz?”
He blushes. “On account of me being smart.”
Hell, I wouldn’t want that nickname. “Very good.”
I turn and head out the door, but I make a note to find out everything I can about this Whiz. He doesn’t really fit the profile for someone who might be selling our information to the enemy, but one thing I’d learned in life is that looks could be deceiving. Like with Dani. She made every protective instinct inside of me roar to life, but the caller had warned me about her. Was she really dangerous?
Up ahead, I see Dragon heading down the hall, I stop and wait for my twin to join me.
“How did it go?” I ask, because his expression is unreadable.
His gaze darts around the hall, and he leans in closer. “Dani was given demon blood, just as we thought, and she has powers. The power to mimic the ability of others…only hers seem stronger than ours.”
I frown. The guys in our group have some of the strongest powers in the club. “How’s that possible?”
He shrugs. “I don’t know, but I’m on my way to talk to Prez. Think you can go relieve Striker, so he can turn in his report too?”
“Yeah, he at Dani’s room?”
He nods.
I’m about to go when I remember the call. “Just a sec.”
His eyes narrow.
I move even closer to him. “Just got a weird call offering money to turn over Dani tonight. The caller suggested he was already working with someone within our organization.”
Dragon’s face goes blank.
“Do you know something?”
“I don’t know,” he says. “I need to think.”
“Should we tell Prez about the phone call?”
I expect him to say yes, so I’m surprised when he shakes his head. “No, let’s just keep this between the four of us. For now.”
“Okay.” I want to tell Prez, but Dragon always has good reasons for his decisions. And as the third in command, or Sergeant-at-Arms, he has the seniority to tell me what to do too.
“Watch your back,” he tells me.
“You too,” I say.
We split ways, and I head for Dani’s room upstairs. Striker is standing outside the door, looking troubled. I tell him about Dragon, and he clasps my shoulder, then hurries off to meet him with Prez. Hesitantly, I knock on Dani’s door.
I hear her soft voice say, “Come in.”
When I enter, she’s sitting on a chair, a book in her lap.
“What’s that?” I say.
She holds it up, and I smile. “That was one of my favorites as a kid.”
She shrugs. “It was the only book Striker could find.”
I point to the chair beside her. “Mind if I sit?”
She nods her head.
Sitting down, I can’t help but look at her. She’s wearing one of the outfits of the sweet butts, and even though those women have never been my type, I’m suddenly finding the revealing outfit to be exactly what I’ve always wanted. The tears in the pants show off just enough of her long, perfect legs, and the top just barely shows the outlines of her nipples.
“Up here.”
I feel myself blush and meet her gaze. “Sorry.”
“So, did you want something?”
Damn it. I wish I was like Dragon. Ladies have a way of wanting to be in his company. I find most women want me when they’re smashed. They’d climb into my lap at the bar and not seem to notice that I don’t talk a lot. And actually, I do better with women when I’m smashed too. When touching them doesn’t result in seeing flashes of their futures
