wasn’t a bad thing.

Though, that took time and I didn’t wanna let Wells wait for too long.

I missed him already.

Chapter Thirty-Four

Wells

Every time Ira asked me where Rooney was I had to make up some kind of lie and assure him that we’d see her again soon.

It hadn’t even been one day since she told me we’d both need space, and to be fairly honest, it was a good decision, even if it took me a little while to realize that.

Once I dropped Ira off at my mother’s this morning, I headed straight to work and started working on my latest project to get my mind off Rooney.

She told me to reflect on myself rather than us, but it was hard not thinking of her when she had already stolen my heart.

It was clear that I wanted our relationship to be a serious one. Well, at least it was clear to me.

So after my realization that Rooney was the one I wanted, I had to push myself to better myself.

She was right when she told me that we were both causing problems, but how on earth would we be able to solve it if she pushed me away to deal with it herself and letting me do the same?

My mind was messy and it didn’t feel right being apart from her, but what else was I supposed to do?

I leaned back against my chair and sighed heavily, brushing my hands through my hair and tugging at the ends while looking at the clock.

It was five minutes to three, and I could leave early today to bring Ira to the hospital to get his new pump.

Maybe that would make me stop thinking of her.

I finished what I was working on and saved everything to shut my computer down, then I grabbed my phone and headed outside to get to my car.

My nerves started to show, this time not because of Rooney but because of Ira.

The new pump would be better, but heavier, and I hoped he’d adjust to it quickly.

When I got to my mother’s house, Ira was already waiting on the porch with her and waving at me as he saw me pull into the driveway.

I smiled, waving back and getting out of the car once I parked it.

“Hey, bud!” I said as he came running toward me with his arms wide open.

My heart warmed immediately, and I picked him up as he reached me.

“Hi, Daddy!”

His arms hugged me tight around the neck and I pressed him against me while kissing his head gently.

“Did you have a fun day at Grandma’s?” I asked, letting him lean back so he could look at me.

“Yes! We played and painted and saw ducks.”

“You did? Did you go to the park then?” I asked, not able to stop kissing his sweet face.

God, I was the luckiest guy on earth to have this little guy as my son.

“Yes,” he said, already squirming in my arms to make me put him back down. I looked up at my mother who was smiling at us, and I smiled back to not show her how I was really feeling on the inside.

“He hadn’t had anything to eat since lunch, just like you said,” she told me.

“That’s good. Thank you. I’ll let you know about tomorrow. I might have to stay a little longer,” I told her, helping Ira into the car already.

“Okay, I don’t mind keeping him for dinner if you wanna take a little time to yourself after work. Or maybe to spend it with Rooney,” she said.

The mention of her name set all the feels off inside of me, making me shiver which is something I definitely never felt.

“Can we see Rooney?” Ira asked, listening to everything that was being said.

“Uh, no, buddy. Not today.”

“Something happen?” Mom asked, already knowing something was off.

“Everything’s fine, Mom. She’s just busy with college, that’s all,” I lied.

“Well, if you ever wanna invite her to have dinner with us, just let me know. Have a good night,” she then said, waving at Ira and getting a wave back before his focus was back on one of the books we bought a while back.

“Bye, Mom,” I said, kissing her cheek and then getting into the car.

“Are we going to the hospital?” Ira asked.

“Yes, to get your new pump. Are you excited?”

“Will it hurt?”

“No, it won’t. It’s just like the pump you have right now. Dr. Cole will only change the device but the rest stays the same, okay?”

“Okay. Can we go to
