above just a regular courthouse and run of the mill lawyers.”
“I don’t want another media circus. It ruined my life last time.”
The woman nodded. “How about I get my contact at the Metropolitan Police to issue a statement about Humphreys arrest. That way, you can get some peace. I’ve seen the things the rags have written about you. I’ll see to it that you’re not harmed anymore by Humphreys' actions.”
“You’re a lifesaver. Literally and figuratively.”
Agent Porath nodded and went into the house as soon as Bethany had handed her the phone.
James stepped forward and offered Bethany a bottle of sports drink. She gave him a grateful smile. The taste of the glue from the duct tape was stuck in her mouth, so she swirled the drink in her mouth before gulping down a generous amount.
“This has been a crazy day,” James said.
“I still don’t understand what happened to Leonard. I swear, he wasn’t such a bad guy when he was dating my mom.”
London squeezed her tight. “Are you sure you want to hear more? There’s time for that later. I want to get you to the ambulance to get you checked out.”
“No,” she answered. “Tell me everything you found out, James.” There was a note of pleading in her tone, which might have explained why her mate’s friend started to talk, despite the disapproving look London gave him.
“Humphreys lost all of his money in a bad business deal a few years ago. He didn’t just lose every single penny, but he was also millions of dollars in debt, in one fell swoop. I think he had a psychotic break because of it. You should see all of the unusual things he did after. It’s a true testament to madness. He was prescribed some medicine by his doctors, from what I was able to discover. But I don’t think he ever took the meds or did the therapy he should have done. That’s why he had your mother killed. He became unhinged and possibly violent. He was no longer stable. He’s been arrested, but he’s also going to get the help he needs.”
“What’s going to happen to Lucille?” she asked.
“She’ll be fine,” London assured her. “Johanna has gathered up all of her resources. She’s going to be here soon. She’s going to take care of Lucille.”
Their conversation was interrupted as Rochelle was being led by two police officers. His hands were bound behind his back with handcuffs. The man had the gall to look over at her and wink. Bethany shivered, and London tightened his hold on her. She was sure he hadn’t seen the man’s gesture, or her dragon would have run him down and toasted his ass.
She nestled into his side, letting the feel of his hard body against hers and his comforting scent sooth her.
“Are you all right?” London asked her for the millionth time.
“I am, yeah. I want to go home.”
Oddly enough, what she pictured in her mind when she spoke the words was not the townhouse she shared with Eugenie. It was his flat. Bethany wanted nothing more than to hunker down on his sofa with a heavy blanket and watch movies until exhaustion got the better of her.
“I’ll drive you,” London whispered against her hair before kissing her head.
“No,” she corrected. “I meant your home.”
London pushed her from the alcove of his arms, but it was only to look into her eyes with deep searching. “My home?” he asked.
She nodded.
London tucked her into his arms, and she was very much surprised that he wasn’t bothered by his nudity. Everyone could see his naked form. It was the most beautiful male body ever, but it was her beautiful male body, and she didn’t like that it was on display for everyone to see.
She told him as much, and he laughed. “I like a little bit of jealousy.” He kissed her softly, and they left the scene of the showdown, not looking back.
A few hours later, after driving back to London’s place and the longest, hottest bubble bath she had ever taken in her life, Bethany was lying on the couch under a warm blanket.
She sat up and turned to face him. “I have to tell you something.”
“Okay,” he said, his brows raised in curiosity.
“I’m sorry. I know I overreacted both times, calling you a liar. After thinking about it, I realize I was scared to get hurt again. To trust someone and be made a fool.”
“Beth, you don’t have to—”
She shook her head. “I do. You
