Spectrum (Stone Society #14) - Faith Gibson Page 0,71

At first, he was terrified to even leave the house, and he had nightmares several times a week. He’s much better now. He has a couple little friends, and he’s really thriving. We have been staying in New Atlanta. When I thought I’d lost you both, I left France and moved to California. I didn’t want anything to do with grapes. It brought back too many memories, so when I was offered a job overseeing the new prison being built, I took it. The ones building it own the one in New Atlanta, so I flew there to learn all I could. The Stone Clan is like one big family. They have helped Rain and me these last few months. I can’t wait for you to meet them.”

Remy showed Isla all the photos of Rain he’d taken on his phone. Isla touched the screen with her fingertips, gushing over each picture of their son. “I can’t wait to hold him.” Isla kept Remy’s phone opened to a picture of Remy and their son smashing grapes as she rested against his chest. It didn’t take long for her to fall asleep, and Remy pressed his cheek to her hair, inhaling deeply. He sent up another prayer of gratitude to the gods for bringing her back to him. He also prayed she wasn’t pregnant, but if she happened to be, he would love the child as his own because it was a part of her. She said it had only been a couple weeks since the doctor had last visited, so that wasn’t enough time for a heart to form. He planned to keep his ears open, just in case.

When they reached the interstate, Remy had settled Isla on the seat with her head in his lap, and she’d slept the entirety of the drive without stirring. Remy had stared at his mate the whole time, much how he hadn’t been able to let Rain out of his sight the first few days after he’d been found. It was early morning when they arrived back in Amsterdam. There was food on the jet, so he hadn’t bothered asking Lorenzo to stop. Lorenzo parked next to Santiago in a secure lot close to where the jet was waiting. While they boarded the plane, Santiago went about his pre-flight routine, double-checking to make sure it was ready for their long trip.

Remy and Isla sat together on one of the sofas with Tamian across from them. Lor was in the cockpit. Once they were in the air, Tamian played host, getting them something to eat and drink. Isla wanted to hear all about Rain as well as what Remy had been up to over the last few months.

“Now that we’re back together, are we going to return to France?” Isla asked.

“If that’s what you want, but first, I’d like to take you back to New Atlanta for a while. I did make a commitment to the Clan for the new prison being built in California, but since my situation has changed for the better, they’ll more than likely be willing to find someone else to take over.”

“Honestly, I just want to be with you and Rain, wherever that is. You said Rain is doing well with his new friends, so maybe we shouldn’t take him away from them so soon.”

“I have a few more months with Gregor and Aldredge before the new prison is finished. I think you’ll like it out in California. We can buy a house on the beach or one up in the hills.”

“What about friends for Rain?”

Remy ran his thumb over the back of Isla’s hand. “I’m sure there are others who have children, but since I thought I lost you both, meeting those in the Clan who had families wasn’t on my radar. I was only focused on work. I can call Sinclair and ask. He’s Rafael’s brother and oversees the Clan out west.”

“Did I make the wrong call?”

Remy gripped Isla’s hand tighter. “About what?”

“Going to confront Felix instead of heading to see Rain. I can’t wait to see him. I know we should have headed to the States immediately, but I can’t let this mess with my family go. I have to look Felix in the eye and let him know he didn’t get away with wanting me and Rain dead just because you aren’t from an Original line.”

“I don’t think so. The Clan in the States went to war with the Greeks for the same reason. Rafael’s uncle
