their daddy had laid down the law about saving their shenanigans for when they were with us or their honorary aunts and uncles. The Silver Saints MC and their wives were more than capable of handling the worst antics any of the kids could come up with—which was to be expected with all of the experience we had. Our club family had grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade. Each time one of the guys found their women, it seemed as though they worked overtime to get her pregnant as often as possible.
I flashed Staci a grin as she walked past me, following her out the front door. “What time did Destin go down?”
She paused on the top step to answer, “I started reading a book to him at seven-thirty, and he passed out before I made it halfway through the story.”
“Thank goodness for that.” About a month ago, our two-year-old son had decided that naps were a thing of the past. Even though I’d put him down for an hour this afternoon, he’d just chattered away to his favorite stuffed animals the entire time. I’d been worried that he would throw a tantrum when Staci told him it was bedtime. Destin tended to fight harder to stay awake at night when he was overtired. The little guy got his stubbornness from his daddy, and it took quite a bit of effort to get him to change his mind about anything. I had visions of our romantic night going down in flames when the babysitter called in the middle of dinner to beg us to come home.
Heaving a sigh of relief that we’d been able to enjoy a meal with just the two of us, I watched Staci from our porch as she made her way across our lawn and over to her house. When she was safely inside, I shut the door and headed back into the living room. Dom had joined the girls on the couch, and they were cuddled on either side of him while he showed them the wallet I’d given him while we’d been out for dinner.
“That’s what you got Dad for your anniversary?” Alice’s nose scrunched as she tilted her head back to look up at me. Then she turned to face her daddy and rolled her eyes. “You got Mom a diamond ring, a bunch of roses, and took her out to dinner at her favorite restaurant. How come you’re not mad that she didn’t do more for you?”
Dom traced the bridge of Alice’s nose with his index finger, smoothing out the wrinkle that had popped up. “You’ve got it all wrong, love bug. Your mom put more thought into this wallet than I did all of the things I did for her today.”
Alice’s head reared back in surprise. “Nuh-uh.”
Kate, not wanting to be left out of the conversation, leaned over Dom’s chest and argued, “Uh-huh. Mom gives the best presents.”
“Hey, now.” Dom patted Kate’s back as he looked up at me with a grin. “I give some pretty damn good gifts, too.”
“Yeah, everybody knows that Dad is the one who gives the best presents,” Alice shot back, crossing her arms over her chest.
I decided to intervene before they could get into a heated argument over absolutely nothing—as only sisters that close in age could do. “Your dad and I both rock at gift-giving.”
“I still think getting three things is way better than just one,” Alice mumbled.
“It depends on what that one present is.” Dom flipped the wallet over to show them where I’d had the Silver Saints MC logo heat stamped into the black leather. “Your mom knew that I didn’t really need a new wallet, but she didn’t just give me one that you could get at any old store. She had this made up special for me.”
“But only after asking Mac for permission to use the club logo.” Worried that they’d decide to grab the puffy paint and design their own Silver Saints MC shirts to wear to the next barbeque, I wagged my index finger at both girls. “Because the club patch is something your daddy and uncles take very seriously. We show it the same respect we would any of them.”
Alice and Kate rolled their eyes and replied in unison, “We know that already, Mom.”
Dom squeezed each of them before getting to his feet and coming to my side. Flinging his arm over my shoulders, he pulled me close and brushed his lips against my temple. “It’s not just the Silver Saints emblem that makes this wallet so special.”
This time, it was Kate’s nose that scrunched. “I don’t see anything else different about it.”
His brown eyes were full of mischief when he glanced at me. “That’s because you guys have never asked the story about how your mom and I met.”
Even though I didn’t really think he was going to spill the beans to our daughters about me trying to steal his wallet, my cheeks still filled with heat. “I’m sure the girls don’t want to hear about that now. It’s time for them to head up to bed anyway.”
“No way,” Kate shrieked, bouncing up and down on the couch cushion. “I want to know how you and Dad met!”
“Me, too!” Alice agreed as she clapped her hands together.
“You heard your mom. It’s time to get ready for bed.” Dom flashed me a sexy smirk before dropping his arm from my shoulders to point toward the stairs. “But if you’re quick about it, I’ll tell you all about how it went down when I met your mom before you go to sleep.”
The girls scampered off the couch and gave each of us a quick kiss before running up the stairs. Crossing my arms over my chest, I gave him a dirty look through my eyelashes. “As happy as I am that they’re not arguing about bedtime for once, I’m not exactly thrilled about them hearing what really went down the day we met.”
“Trust me, little doll. Go take a bath while I give our girls a sugar-coated version of the story where my wallet fell on the floor and you found it or something like that.” He gave my butt a little swat. “Don’t worry. I won’t tell them anything that’ll make them tuck a candy bar in their pocket the next time you take them grocery shopping.”
I wasn’t going to pass up the chance for a bubble bath, but I muttered dire threats about withholding sex from—not that Dom took any of it seriously since he knew I wouldn’t be able to resist him for more than maybe a minute—the entire way up the stairs until we headed in different directions down the hall. It would have been ironic as heck if the girls really did try to shoplift after hearing about me stealing their dad’s wallet, considering my transgression was pretty minor compared to some of the stuff their dad had gotten up to in the past. The club probably should’ve been called The Silver Devils MC because then members definitely weren’t saints. But they always took care of their family and tried to do what was best, and that was more than enough for me.
