where to begin.

“Why? This is the thing you’ve been working toward your whole career.”

He cups my chin and lifts my head up until our eyes meet. When he sees the abject misery in mine, his expression softens and he slides his hands up to cup my shoulders and squeezes them gently. “You can tell me anything, babe. You know that.”

I bite my lip to stop its trembling and compose myself on a deep breath. “I’m sorry. I just…I don’t want the job. Not anymore.”

His head jerks back, his lips pucker in confusion and he eyes me warily. “You don’t want it?”

“I don’t want what comes with it,” I clarify.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning, we’d have to move. Or I’d have to commute between here and Atlanta.”

“We could have made it work, Kal.”

“We’re already making it work. Right here. I love Rivers Wilde. I love the bookstore and Bianca’s school and most of all, I love being a Wilde.”

He laughs and “You would have been a Wilde if we lived in Atlanta.”

“But you wouldn’t have been, Remi.”

His expression tightens and he opens his mouth and then, closes it again abruptly. He’s been nothing be supportive me of me, but I know he understands exactly what I’m saying.I nudge him with my shoulder. “You think I don’t know how hard this has been for you?”

“I’ve been fine,” he protests.

“You deserve to be better than fine. I want you to be as happy as you’ve made me. And not taking that job doesn’t diminish that one bit. You couldn’t say the same about moving to Atlanta. So, yeah. I don’t want it.”

He’s silent for so long that I finally move to stand in front of him. He brushes hastily at his cheeks and my jaw drops.

“Are you crying?”

“Hell no,” he growls, but he pulls me to him and hugs me so tight it’s hard to breathe. “You’re choosing me over everything else?” he breathes into my shoulder.

I wrap my arms around his neck and hug him back. His thundering heartbeat is an echo of mine. “Without you, there is nothing else.”

Chapter 12

Remi

The Legend

“Oh God, Remi. I’m coming. Jesus,” Kal cries out and arches off the bed. Her voice is a hoarse from screaming and this time when she pushes at my head, I have mercy on her. I take one last, long lick of her sweet as honey pussy and press kisses along her hips, over the soft swell of her stomach and up until I reach her mouth.

She hooks an arm around my neck and returns my kiss with a tenderness that I’ll never get used to. I turn us until I’m on my back and she arranges herself with her head tucked into my shoulder.

“You are insatiable, I thought you were trying to suck my soul out of my body,” she murmurs.

“Nah, I like it just where it is, but you’re right about the insatiable part. I’ll never get enough of you.”

“You’re saying that now. Wait until my stomach sticks out further than my feet.”

I run my fingers down her side and then splay my hand across her stomach.

“Then, there’ll just be more of you to love.”

“You’re such a sweet talker, Remi. I love you.” She yawns and nestles closer.

“I love you, too. So much.”

She pats my chest and in less than a minute, she’s snoring softly.

I lie there, alone with my thoughts and marvel at the magnitude of my bounty. For so long, I told myself a meaningful career and being an uncle, brother, and son would be enough.

And it might have been. But this life I’m building with Kal is so much more than enough.

As I drift off to sleep, I recall the inscription in the book that brought us together almost 25 years ago. “All legends are lies. Make your own truth.”

How wrong that turned out to be.

This once in a lifetime love I found is nothing short of legendary, and it is the truest thing I’ve ever known.
