of the door opening before Reid’s voice gets farther away.
I don’t waste time second-guessing myself. I climb to my feet and follow quietly, keeping myself hidden in the hallway as he moves around the kitchen, making coffee. Thankfully, he starts talking louder now, likely feeling safe in the knowledge that I can’t hear him.
“Not my fault you’re acting like a pussy,” he teases with a laugh.
He’s quiet for a minute while he listens to the other person before snorting. “You’re just jealous you won’t get her cherry.” He’s quiet again as his words beat at my skin, leaving me feeling like a fool. I knew I had to be careful, but even so, I’ve struggled to keep myself from falling for his charms. Finding out he’s just another lying asshole is precisely what I need to fortify the walls around my heart.
I don’t know who he’s talking to, but it can only really be one of the other sector heads or Zodiac, and I can’t see him talking to the boss man like that.
I think back to what I told him last night, about my suspicions about Zodiac, and wonder if he’ll go running to him, selling me out, but it doesn’t seem his style. I’ll just have to be sure to keep my cards close to my chest. Wyatt and Megan have softened me, but I need to be on my A-game if I’m to survive swimming in these shark-infested waters.
“Yeah, lay low for a bit. I’ll call when I’m healed up. Nothing we can do about it now, Jude.”
I file the name Jude away for later and slip back the way I came, climbing onto the bed before lying in the position I was in before. I hear his footsteps approaching so I close my eyes and wait for his next move.
He climbs on the bed behind me, tucking us back into the spoons position. I tense before I can stop myself and know he felt it too when he freezes.
“You awake, Red?”
“Hmm...” I mumble, pulling away when he tries to tug me closer.
“I need the bathroom,” I tell him quietly, climbing from the bed and locking myself inside the bathroom. I take care of business and use the reprieve to come up with a viable plan.
When I open the door, I find him standing right outside it, watching me with barely concealed hunger. It doesn’t matter that I’m mad, pissed, and disappointed in the man, my body still responds to his like we are connected with an invisible tether that sends a pulse of lust from his smirk to my pussy.
It’s official. I hate Kai Reid.
“You feeling better?” I ask, not giving anything away. If he wants to play games, so be it.
“Turns out a beautiful nurse is enough to heal most wounds.” He grins, slipping my hair off my shoulder.
“Imagine that.” I roll my eyes. “Well, since you’re feeling better, you won’t mind showing me my new pad. That way, I can get out of your hair.”
I try to push past him, but he blocks the way with his body, halting my movements.
With a huff, I look up at him and see his grin grow wider.
“Something wrong, Red?” he goads me.
“Nothing some food and some coffee won’t fix, especially seeing as my last one went cold while I was playing nursemaid to you.”
I cross my arms and wait for him to move. He takes in my defensive posture and steps back with his hands up in capitulation.
“Okay, you get showered and ready, and I’ll whip us up some scrambled eggs, sound good?”
“That would be great, thank you.” I offer him a small smile of my own. I might have to lock up my wayward libido, but there is no point in being a bitch unnecessarily. I’m going to be working with him in some capacity or another after all.
He leaves me to it, so I take the quickest shower in the history of showers and get dressed in my jeans, tank top, and the hoodie I’ve now claimed.
I make sure everything of mine is shoved into my backpack and then after a moment’s hesitation, I shove in the T-shirt I slept in last night too.
Reid is just plating up the food when I set my bag down next to the sofa.
He carries both plates to the table and indicates for me to sit. I do, choosing the seat that gives me an unobstructed view of the city at night now that the blinds have been opened.
