shoulder to look back at him as he steps off himself. I should play his game. The wolf would stop chasing if there was nothing to chase.

“Are you sure you’re not cold?” I ask Mackenzie. She looks up from her menu, a wicked smile pulling at her lips. Something has changed and I don’t mean her clothing. She’s been different since she came back out from getting ready. She’s now the one touching me. I’m not sure what she has up her sleeve but I know her better than she thinks I do. Whatever game she’s playing I’ll welcome, as long as it gets her to spend time with me and let me in.
She’s saving me valuable time with not having to hunt her down. I don’t know what has changed but I rather enjoy her being the one to reach for me. I could grow used to this. Not that I mind having to hunt her down either. I’ll take whatever I can get when it comes to her.
“I promise if I get cold that you’ll be the first to know.” She picks up her water and takes a sip. I wonder where she even got the dress from. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before. She’s always in her buttoned-up tops and skirts for work. Everything pressed and ironed within an inch of its life. She never has even a hair out of place.
This dress is different. It’s a soft petal pink that shows off all of her beautiful sun-kissed skin. I find myself jealous of the fucking sun. It flows all around her like her hair that she’s let down for the night. I want my love to be the thing that surrounds her the most. I glance around the room, taking note of a few people looking our way.
“You really think Colt isn't going to realize it’s your sister and not you at work?” I ask her, trying to distract my mind. I don’t want to think about other men looking at her. I’m having problems of my own keeping my hands to myself. I know if I start touching her that I won’t be able to stop.
“What’s he going to do? Fire me?” She lets out a small laugh. I’ve watched Colt around Mackenzie. I never once noticed his eyes lingering too long. Oftentimes he didn't even notice she was in the room unless she was giving him a hard time. I’ll never understand how he could ignore her. She’s the only thing that matters once she steps into a room.. She demands attention without even realizing it. But Colt not noticing her works better for me. Otherwise, I don't know how the hell I would deal with her going to work every day.
“You don’t think he’ll fire you?” I realize that I don’t have anyone on my staff that I wouldn't fire. That said, I would have never hired Mackenzie.
“You make yourself irreplaceable. They may say everyone is replaceable but I’d be glad to sit with a bucket of popcorn and watch Colt try to do without me. I’ll be nice and say he’d last a day.”
She shrugs, going back to looking at the menu. I can tell by the way that her eyes are moving over it that she’s having an internal struggle about what she should order.
“You are irreplaceable.” I couldn't argue with her there.
“Besides. I think he’s going to fall for my sister.” She looks back up at me. “I think they’ll actually fit.”
“Don’t you call him an asshole?”
“This is going to un-asshole him. No one can be mean to Madison. He’s going to fall right into her sweetness.” She smiles, looking proud of herself. “Plus, I think he’ll be good for her. Somehow, I know he’ll be good to her. That he’ll take care of her.”
“Then you won’t have to take care of her?” I poke. Trying to peel back more layers of my wife.
She licks her lips, setting the menu down onto the table. “She’s my sister. I’ll always look after her.”
I reach out, unable to help myself, tucking a piece of her hair behind her ear. “I know you will. It’s who you are,” I agree. “I think we all need someone to take care of us.”
She fidgets in her seat. That is and always will be what I intend to do for her. She is the most important thing in my life. I only need her to realize it.
“I can take care of myself.” She looks away
