are currently naked. Everyone takes the clothes, and as soon as penises are put away, they tackle the shirts. As soon as they pull them on, they immediately start grumbling and cursing at Lafe.
“Dude. You have fucking problems,” Herrick says, shaking his head.
“You mean ducking problems?” Lafe supplies.
They groan.
I look down at the shirt Luca is now wearing and see that there’s a duck on it that’s dressed like a vampire—fangs and all—and says, Count Quackula.
Herrick has one that says Not a single duck was given today, and Penn’s says, The only rubber I like is ducky.
“Wow. That’s a lot of duck pun shirts,” I comment.
Lafe grins. “Yep. Mine’s the best one, though.” He sits up so I can see. It’s a very arrogant looking duck on the front and says, I have a huge...duck.
I snicker. “I’m sure Addie will love it.”
“Wait till she sees my boxers,” he replies, wagging his brows.
When we get back to the compound, Addie is at the gate with the guards, practically bouncing on her feet. Penn pulls over, and I get out. She immediately flings herself at me. “Good grief, I’m glad you’re okay!” she says in a rush before pulling away.
“I am. Everything is fine now,” I reassure her.
“Is it true you knocked out your old alpha with a plunger?”
Well, melted cheese, that spread quickly. “Um, yeah.”
“Awesome,” she says with glee.
She lets go of me and then turns and punches Herrick through the open car window.
“Ouch! What was that for?” he asks, rubbing the spot on his arm.
“For not telling me sooner about what was happening so that I could go kick some mongoose ass!” she says with a glare. “Next time there’s a pack battle, I’m totally going with you.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Absolutely yes.”
Herrick growls. “You’re a damn duck. You are not fighting. I won’t allow you to get hurt.”
“Hey, my duck is badass,” she says, jabbing a finger into his chest. “She could totally fuck you up.”
Herrick snorts, but Penn reaches over and smacks him. “You idiot. You want her to shift and attack us again? It took hours for her duck to stop biting us last time,” he snaps. Herrick crosses his arms and glowers.
Addie mimics his stance. “Admit that my duck is badass.”
Herrick snorts, but a shoe chucking the back of his head from Lafe makes the laughter choke off. “Fine. Your duck is badass.”
Addie smiles. “See? That wasn’t so hard was it?”
Instead of answering her, he pops open the door, tugs her onto his lap, and shuts it again. Addie tips her head back and laughs.
“Want a ride back to the warehouse?” Penn asks me, smirking at Herrick and Addie who are now totally making out on the front seat.
I laugh. “No, you guys go ahead.” Luca hops out to join me.
With a nod, Penn pulls away.
I stay at the gate, waiting for every car to get back to the compound. I want to thank every single one of my packmates. I don’t even know all their names still, and yet, they came to rescue me. I can’t even begin to describe how that makes me feel.
As each one drives through the gate, I thank everyone for coming to help me. Most of them seem embarrassed that I’m thanking them, and they just echo Igor’s earlier sentiment that I’m “pack” and that there’s no other explanation necessary. If a pack member is in trouble, they show up. That’s what being a pack means to them. They’re a family—we’re a family.
The last one to arrive is a silver truck being driven by one of the enforcers—I think his name is Jericho—and...I squint at the person in the passenger seat, thinking surely I’m mistaken, but I’m not. There, in all her two-toned glory, is Jetta.
Jericho comes to a stop just inside the gate and rolls his window down. I lean forward. “You came to help?” I ask her, unable to keep the surprise out of my voice.
She shifts uncomfortably in the seat. “I was bored.”
I grin. “Yeah, right. You’re my friend. Admit it.”
Jetta huffs in annoyance. “You’re a tolerable roommate.”
From Jetta, that’s practically a declaration of her undying loyalty.
“Thanks, Jetta. I really appreciate it.”
She looks out the window. “Whatever.”
Jericho snorts in amusement before tipping his head at me and pulling away, leaving Luca and me at the gate. We walk, hand in hand, down the dirt road towards the warehouses. I look up at the clear night sky, seeing the stars twinkling. “That never gets old.”
