to do. She’s not a bad person; we just didn’t fit. A fact that she disagrees with.

“How are you adjusting to the pack?”

“So far so good. Everyone is really nice.”

“Yeah, this pack is the best one in the entire country. Maybe even the world.”

Reese nods. “How long have you been a part of Pack Aberrant?”

“Oh, I joined right around the same time Luca did,” she says, giving me a winning smile. “Which is part of why we hit it off so easily.”

I inwardly sigh. Here we go.

Reese’s brown eyes flick back and forth between us. “Oh, gotcha.”

“We dated briefly, but things didn’t work out,” I interject.

I feel Susie stiffen beside me. “That’s not really the whole truth. Luca doesn’t like long-term commitment. He’s more of a let’s just have some fun kind of guy.” She turns her head to shoot Zoey a look. “Kinda like you, Zo.”

Zoey throws a hair tie at her face. “Shut up, Boozy Susie.”

Susie just shrugs and turns back around. She’s not a bad person, but when she’s pissed, her claws come out. I guess I should expect nothing less, considering what kind of shifter she is.

Satisfied that she’s staked some sort of claim on me and aired our dirty laundry, Susie digs out her phone and gives it her sole attention.

I can tell by the sour look on Reese’s face that she’s about as pleased by this turn of events as I am. The last thing you want to do after getting in a brand new relationship is be forced to sit with an ex.

Still, I don’t want to be stuck here in awkward silence for the next six hours, so I clear my throat and try to think of something to say to make conversation. But as soon as I open my mouth, Reese shifts her body to lean against the window. “I’m going to sleep.”

“Oh...Okay.”

With her back facing me, she curls up with her feet braced on the edge of the seat and closes her eyes. She pretends to sleep, even though I know for a fact that she’s not. I sigh.

Beside me, Susie flashes me her phone. “Look how cute we are, Luca,” she says, showing me an old photo of her and I together in my bed, her arms wrapped around my neck.

Reese’s shoulders stiffen.

“Enough, Susie. Don’t act like we were something we weren’t.”

Her eyes flash with anger. “And don’t act like we were nothing,” she snaps back.

I cross my arms and look away. “I’m going to sleep too,” I grumble before leaning my head back against the headrest and closing my eyes.

This is going to be a long fucking car ride.

That was the longest car ride ever.

By the time we get to Tomales Beach, everyone is kind of grumpy or twitchy from being stuck in the car. Rattlesnake Zoey takes one look at the otters hanging out on the rocks and bursts into tears because they remind her of her boyfriend, Matt, who still won’t talk to her. Susie stalks off in one direction, Luca in the other, and Addie runs past us all, laughing like a maniac as she dives into the water fully-clothed.

I’m sore from sitting in an awkward position in the car all night. I’m also sore from being in an emotionally awkward position all night.

To say the car ride was uncomfortable is putting it mildly. I don’t think Luca stopped grinding his jaw the entire time we drove. I could feel the tension he was putting off, and it just blended with my own.

I was looking forward to the beach trip. I was looking forward to spending time with him and getting to know some of my new packmates.

But then I got Susie’d.

She wanted to make me jealous. And I fell for it.

Why do chicks do that? Why do we have to be bitches to each other just for having the same taste in men? Shouldn’t we fist bump? Pass off the proverbial cock baton? Why can’t she just be like, you know what? I enjoyed that ride, and now you will too. Good for you, livin’ your best life. If you break up, message me and we’ll talk shit together, kthxbai.

It would be so much nicer if females could stick together and not hate on each other just for dating an ex and liking the same dick. If I had anything to do with their breakup, then sure, I’d deserve it. But I didn’t, so I don’t. She should really take up her problem with
