a grin. “So that’s my story. My sister really does live in Boston and I really was thinking about hanging out there for a while…but I don’t want to take trouble to my family’s doorstep so that plan is probably out.”
“Because of me?”
“Because of the Vipers,” he said. “They have a reputation for not taking any prisoners. You’re lucky you got away from them in Baton Rouge, but I don’t think they’re going to let this go until…”
“Until I’m dead,” she finished for him. He cleared his throat and said:
“I have to ask, if your father is a cop, why did you run instead of calling him?”
“I panicked,” she said. “My father hated Bobby, so we haven’t been close for a while. Dad has always been overprotective and an ‘I told you so’ kind of guy. I guess I just didn’t want to hear it. Stupid, I know.”
“I’m not going to stop you if you want to call him now. You could always have him come pick you up and let him keep you safe until the Vipers are put away for what they did.” Blackheart had told him not to let her call anyone, but Razor wasn’t sure he could keep her safe, nor was he sure he wanted that responsibility.
“Do you think that will ever happen? I mean, seriously, if these guys were so easy to catch and prosecute, do you think they’d be bold enough to kill Bobby in a public place in the first place?”
He shook his head and thought about himself. He was currently wanted for murder. Never mind that they had it all wrong, the police didn’t know that, yet. Still, here he was, hundreds of miles from home and being protected by his club and their friends. “No…I’m sure they didn’t leave any evidence, if they did leave the body.” Razor’s phone buzzed and he took it back out. It was Blackheart again and the text said, “Turn on Channel 5 News.”
“What is it?” she asked.
“Turn on the news, Channel 5.” Kayleigh picked up the remote control that lay on the coffee table between them and turned on the television. She flipped through until she found the channel and then for the next few minutes, they both watched, wondering what they were supposed to be looking for. It became obvious however when a picture of Kayleigh’s pretty, smiling face flashed across the screen. Another picture was next to hers, that of a man about twenty-five or so with longish, curly dark hair and dark green eyes. The anchor was saying, “Kayleigh Bonner and Robert Thomas are both wanted for questioning. The two lived together in a home here in West Baton Rouge where Mr. Thomas’s mother found copious amounts of blood early this afternoon. Robert Thomas didn’t show up for his shift at work today and failed to make it to a lunch he had arranged with his mother. Miss Bonner owns a landscaping business and none of her employees or customers have been able to reach her this morning. We’ve reached out to Miss Bonner’s father, Assistant Chief of Police Craig Bonner with the West Baton Rouge PD, as well but haven’t received any comment. According to Mrs. Thomas, she spoke to her son on the phone late last night and he has not been seen or heard from since. Miss Bonner left work yesterday around 6 p.m. and according to neighbors she was last seen climbing a fence and running through their yard just before dawn this morning.”
“Son of a bitch,” Kayleigh whispered, just before the face of Bobby’s mother filled the screen. She was standing in front of a microphone and her eyes were red and swollen as she said, “My son would have never just taken off without letting me know. My mother’s intuition is telling me he’s in trouble. There was so much blood in that house…” She began to sob and Bobby’s father took the podium and added, “The police can’t tell us yet whose blood that is inside of his house, so we’re keeping the faith that our Bobby is still alive and well, out there somewhere. Our family is offering a reward for any information leading to finding him.” Then, almost as an afterthought he said, “Or Kayleigh,” and then added, “She has to know something…why else would she run?”
“Oh my God! They think I did something to him.” Razor was still listening to the newscaster, but it was obvious, the Vipers were setting her
