her legs apart and licked my lips.
“Hudson! What in the world are you doing?”
Sliding my gaze up to hers, I smirked. “Having you as a pre-dinner snack.”
The sound of someone knocking on the cabin door caused me to roll away from Greer and look at the small clock on the side table. She stayed fast asleep, her hair spread across the pillow.
“Six in the morning? Who in the hell could that be?” I asked as I slipped out of the bed, grabbed a pair of sweats, and headed down the steps.
Another knock.
If it was Jean, I was going to lose my shit on her.
I opened the door and saw two men about my age standing there.
“May I help you?” I asked, glancing between the two of them.
“Hudson Higgins?” the one with light brown hair and dark green eyes asked. He looked vaguely familiar.
“That’s me.”
He reached his hand out for mine. “Kyle Larson. I’m Greer’s brother.”
Oh. Holy. Shit.
I took his hand in mine and gave it a firm shake. “Kyle, it’s nice to meet you.”
“This is Hunter Turner, a good friend of mine, and another police officer here in Boggy Creek Valley.”
I swung my gaze over to the other guy standing there. He was accompanied by a German shepherd-looking dog.
“That’s Jack, Hunter’s partner and very bestest friend,” Kyle said with a laugh he clearly didn’t mean to let out.
Hunter shot Kyle a dirty look. “Fuck off, Larson.” His blue eyes turned back to me.
“Nice looking German shepherd.”
Hunter smiled. “Thank you, but he’s a Belgian Malinois. He gave me a quick once-over. “Looks like we woke you up.”
“Um, yes, but that’s okay. What can I do for you gentlemen?” I asked, motioning for them to come in and praying that Kyle wouldn’t notice his sister’s backpack sitting on the living room floor.
Kyle shook his head. “No, thanks, we didn’t mean to show up unannounced. Hunter and I were coming up to check on a hunting cabin that we got a call on, and I thought I’d swing by to introduce myself and say thanks for fixing the front steps.”
Hunter turned and looked at the newly made steps. “Nice work. If you feel like doing more, my old hunting cabin could use some fixing up.”
I laughed. “Maybe let me finish this deadline I’m on for my book, and then we can talk.”
With a wide smile, Hunter nodded.
“Listen, we won’t keep you. Just wanted to stop by and introduce ourselves,” Kyle said again.
“It was great meeting you both,” I said with a relieved smile. I stepped out onto the porch and watched them retreat down the steps. Kyle clearly had no idea his sister was here, or he would have already kicked my ass and set the police dog on me. Jack gave me a good once-over before he followed Hunter.
I turned to head inside. It was cold, and I didn’t have a shirt or shoes on.
“Oh, by the way,” Kyle said, turning to face me before he got into his cruiser. “You hurt my sister, and I’ll kill you and make it look like an accident. We clear on that?”
I felt my smile instantly fade as I stared at him. “Um…I…”
Hunter leaned against the truck, clearly hiding a smile.
I turned back to Kyle, who looked like he meant every single word he’d just said. “I have no intention of hurting her. Ever.”
Kyle gave one quick nod. “Good. She means everything to me, and although I think things are moving a bit fast, I trust her judgment. Why don’t you join us for dinner at our folks’ house today? We’ll be celebrating our birthday, and I’m sure they’d like to meet you.”
I nodded. “Yes. Of course. I’ll be there.”
“Great. Well, enjoy the rest of your day, Hudson.”
Hunter lifted his hand and gave me a wave. I did the same. “Right. Same to the both of you.”
I watched as they drove down the drive and turned onto the main road, heading up into the hills.
Rubbing the back of my neck, I turned and headed back into the cabin, only to find Greer standing there. Instead of my T-shirt, she wore one of my sweatshirts that said New York City on it. She looked adorable.
Her nose crinkled. “Did he say anything mean to you?”
I shut the door and made my way over to her. Leaning down, I kissed her on the lips and softly said, “Good morning, sweetheart.”
She practically melted in my arms. “Morning. What did my brother say?”
“Something along the lines of if I hurt
