at it like a crazy jealous girlfriend. Danny: You better be ready you lazy shit. Six more hours to go.
That was the last straw. I searched for my clothes, but it seemed he’d turned everything into confetti, so I pulled a shirt and a pair of shorts from his drawer before sneaking out of his bedroom.
I called a cab and bolted before Devin woke up. It wasn’t like I wanted to leave, but he was going on a long expedition that would take him around the world and far from me. My heart couldn’t handle the goodbye. I chickened out and sent a message as soon as I stepped out of the cab.
When I opened the door, I caught my parents mid-conversation and they froze. “What’s going on?”
“Nothing,” my mother answered.
“Why are you crying?” my father snarled. He looked down at my clothes—seeing my walk-of-shame outfit, which clearly wasn’t mine, didn’t make his attitude any easier. Shit. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. “I’m going to kill him.”
“Daddy. It’s not that. He didn’t do anything wrong. I love him, and I couldn’t say goodbye.”
That seemed to get him to drop his hackles. He hugged me to him and I fell into his arms, pressing my head onto his shoulder, letting out the sadness in me. “You just have to focus on going back to school. Maybe enjoy the summer, date...”
I pulled away from him and tilted my head up with my brows knitted and a scowl on my face. “Did you say date?”
He felt my anger right away. “I’m just saying. You’re young, and he’s a wealthy guy who travels the world.”
“That you don’t think we’re good together.” I ultimately pushed away from him, shaking my head at the bullshit coming out of his mouth.
“No, but you two don’t have to be together right now while he’s gone.”
“So you think he’s going to be seeing other people, and you want me to do the same. Did you tell him that too?” Before he could respond, my phone rang and I picked it up without looking.
“What the fuck kind of goodbye is that?” Devin growled in my ear. I regretted leaving more than ever.
Before I could explain myself, the doorbell rang. I opened it to find Devin on the other side. He lowered his phone and dragged me into his arms. “You’re mine.” I pressed my fingers over his chest. “Say it, Jamie. Tell me you’re mine.”
“I’m yours,” I whimpered, letting out tears that streamed down my face.
“Good. Please, kitten. Don’t cry. I know this sucks so damn bad, but I promise to call as often as I can.” I pulled him in for another kiss.
“I have to leave, but I needed that first. Be a good girl while I’m gone. When I come back, be ready to get married; either with the whole thing planned out, or we’ll be flying to Vegas. That part is up to you. I just want you to be my wife.” He grabbed my hand and slid an insanely large diamond ring on my finger.
“You’re not going to ask?” I challenged, for the hell of it. I couldn’t let him know that he won so easily.
He squeezed my hand before bringing it up to his lips for a kiss. “Nope. I’m not giving you a chance to change your mind.”
“Well, I’ll give you two months and see if you change your mind.”
“And when I come back looking for my bride, I’ll be flipping you over my shoulder and kidnapping you to Vegas. You’re it for me, Jamie.” He pushed off the door frame and hustled back to his Jag.
I stood and watched him drive away. Once he was gone, I closed the door and leaned against it to admire the massive rock he’d slipped on my finger. Smiling to myself, I wondered how in the world I was going to last two months until I saw him again. How was I going to last a night?
I pushed off the door and ignored my father, walking straight to my room. I loved him, but he was being extremely pigheaded about Devin. Throwing myself down onto my mattress, I let out a wailing cry. This was precisely the reason I didn’t want to get involved with Devin. I fell in love with him, but he travelled the world for work.
Chapter Three
Devin
The second I left Jamie’s home my world felt empty. Still, I had a job to do, and I knew it wasn’t something I could
