good start,” she said.

“Thank you.”

They talked about all the baby plans they were making even though she was terrified. Ree spoke of relying on her faith to get through the anxieties. Felix wasn’t the praying type. Maybe it was because he never considered himself worthy of God’s love or His mercy. He would pray for her, Stephen, and the baby.

Ree moaned on the other end of the connection. “Oh, yeah, right there, baby.”

Felix snorted. “Um, should I let you go?”

“Stephen is paying up the foot rub he owes me for betting against me. I told him it was only a matter of time before you and Jude found your way back to each other. Haven’t I been saying this since our freshman year?”

“I think you’ve mentioned it once or twice.”

“Ree is all-knowing.”

Felix laughed so hard he nearly dropped Jude’s phone in the pool. “Ree is also talking about herself in the third person.”

“Gross. Oh, not you, baby. Dig your thumb in my arch again. Oh! Ohhhh. Felix, I gotta go. These pregnancy hormones are intense.” She lowered her voice. “Some of them make me happy, and Stephen even happier, if you know what I mean.”

Felix laughed. “Attagirl.”

They said their goodbyes, then Felix set the phone on the concrete next to him. Jude joined him a few moments later, carrying two cups of coffee. He handed them both to Felix to hold while he sat down and dangled his legs in the pool too. Felix passed the cup with creamer and sugar to Jude and kept the black coffee for himself.

“Your house is beautiful, but this is my favorite part.” Felix looked at the lush landscaping surrounding the pool. “It’s so peaceful.”

“Maybe too peaceful. Attack peacocks would add a nice flair.”

Felix laughed. “I could bring Pete and Pearl over for a visit.”

“What a sight that would be. You driving your pet peacocks around town.”

“They’re not my peacocks,” Felix said.

“So you say.”

“So I know.”

They bantered back and forth for a bit before Jude set his cup of coffee down and jumped into the pool.

“You’re so mean,” Felix said, not bothering to hide his pout. Then Jude made his intentions known when he slid his hand up Felix’s thigh. Felix quickly changed his tune when Jude stripped his borrowed shorts off and took Felix’s dick in his mouth. Felix loved the feel of Jude’s firm lips working his shaft up and down, bringing him to a shattering climax, which Felix repaid on his knees in the outdoor shower.

The trip to the cellular store was quick but costly. Usually, that kind of unexpected purchase would cause Felix a fuck ton of anxiety. What if he lost his job down the road? It could be money he’d need someday. The questions would typically play out endlessly, causing bouts of insomnia. Today, he was calmer. Maybe it was because of the man beside him, or the mind-blowing orgasms received from said man. Or, perhaps it was from Felix’s conviction that Cameron Spencer would pay for all the damage he’d caused—one way or the other.

Felix was shocked by the volume of missed calls, voicemail messages, and texts. There were several calls from a number he didn’t recognize, but the caller didn’t leave a voice mail. Felix read his texts and listened to all his messages before replying or returning calls in the order of priority, starting with Minerva. He assured her he was fine and didn’t mention anything about the real cause of the explosion. He gave her the same song and dance as everyone else; the fewer people who knew the truth, the better.

The frantic messages from Rocky triggered reactions in Felix, ranging from humor to astonishment that this man was his friend. It made his insides feel like a glass of Sprite—bubbly and refreshing.

The messages that surprised him the most were from Royce Locke, a Savannah detective in the Major Crimes Unit. His partner and boyfriend, Sawyer Key, had gone to Emory with Felix and Jude. The guys were the ones who pulled Felix, Jonah, and Rocky into the Franco Humphries investigation. If Royce was calling, did it mean SPD had already figured out the car fire wasn’t accidental?

Felix called Royce as soon as they were back in Jude’s car.

“Who have you pissed off now?” Royce asked once greetings were exchanged.

Felix bristled. “What a rude assumption.”

Royce laughed. “Come on. You know the effect you have on people. How are you feeling?”

“As good as can be expected,” Felix replied vaguely. He wasn’t sure how much he
