Mr. Perfect (Sinister in Savannah #2) - Aimee Nicole Walker Page 0,84
Still not sure I deserve the title.”
If Felix had learned anything from this week, it was that life was too short, no matter how long you lived. Might as well do it without regrets. Shouldacouldawouldaville, as Marla called it, was overcrowded and didn’t have good restaurants.
“I think you do,” Felix said.
They spoke for a few more minutes before hanging up. Felix dialed Reanna next but wasn’t in any way prepared for her greeting.
“Jude Arrow, have you kidnapped Felix? I’ve been calling and texting him for hours. He doesn’t answer, won’t return my messages, and now the calls go straight to voice mail. What is going on? He better be tied to your bed and sleeping off some epic sex hangover.”
“Why the hell do you have Jude’s number saved in your phone?” Felix demanded.
“Felix! Where the fuck have you been? I was worried sick about you. I didn’t get a moment of sleep.”
“You have to answer my question first,” Felix said stubbornly.
“Fine.” He imagined the dramatic eye roll which had probably accompanied Ree’s exasperated tone of voice. “The two of us had lunch a few times over the years since we both lived and worked in Atlanta.”
“Did you talk about me?”
“That’s two questions,” Ree said. “I can’t believe you have the audacity to ask me that.” Okay, so they hadn’t talked about him. “You should be glad you’re not within slapping distance.”
“I’m sorry I missed all your calls. My phone was damaged in the fire.”
Ree gasped. “Fire? What fire?”
Uh-oh. Felix had assumed her frantic calls were due to the explosion, but he’d thought wrong. He gave her the same spiel about the shorted wire and subsequent fire. He left out the explosion part, neglected to mention the Southern mafia connection, and didn’t tell her he was hurt. “Jude is going to take me to the cell phone store when it opens.”
“So, you and Jude, huh?” Felix heard some shuffling, then Ree spoke away from the phone. “Babe, you owe me twenty bucks and a foot massage.”
“Attaboy, Felix,” Stephen said in the background.
“Okay, you have my full attention,” Ree said. “Tell me everything and do not leave out a single detail.”
Felix laughed. “Why were you frantically calling my phone?”
“You have to answer my question first,” Ree said.
“Jude and I have been talking and working through things.”
“With or without clothes on?” she asked. Had they been face-to-face, Ree would’ve been leaning forward and waggling her eyebrows. Nothing was off limits between them. They told each other everything.
“Both.”
Ree let out a delightful squeal and followed it up with a lengthy giggle. “It’s about time,” she said breathlessly.
“For you to tell me what upset you last night,” Felix said.
“Oh, Fee. I was calling you because I have exciting news. The absolute best news.” Ree sniffled, and Felix knew she was crying.
Thank God they were happy tears, or he’d be driving to Atlanta to fuck somebody up. Ree was a badass and didn’t need men fighting her battles for her, but he’d happily stand beside her.
“What is it, Ree?” There was only one thing left in this world Ree wanted. Felix was terrified to hope.
“I’m pregnant,” she said before squealing again. “We went in for our physicals and were expecting the results to tell us how difficult it would be for us to conceive together. When the doctor walked into the room with this big smile on her face, I assumed the outlook was good. Then she said, ‘I have great news. You don’t need my services.’ I told her we most definitely did and reminded her that we’d been trying to get pregnant for eighteen months. The doctor smiled and said, ‘And you finally did it. Congratulations.’”
Felix’s heart swelled and tears stung the back of his eyes. “This is the best news ever. I’m so happy for you and Stephen.”
“Felix,” Ree said, her voice thick with emotion. “Stephen told me about the conversation he had with you during your birthday dinner. Do you have any idea how much I love you?”
“As much as I love you,” Felix said as tears spilled down his face.
“Well, if you and Jude finally stop dicking around—” Ree laughed. “Okay, maybe I have that backward. If you and Jude start dicking around and build a life together, I would happily be your surrogate if you want to have a baby.”
“Ree, I don’t know what to say.” He’d never thought of himself as father material before, but he could easily picture Jude cradling a newborn against his chest.
