Gigi’s door and helped her onto the front seat before climbing in the second-row seat left open for him.
Brody smiled at Gigi. “Are you kicking Montgomery to the curb and giving the rest of us a chance?”
Owen thumped him on the shoulder. “Stop flirting with my girl and drive, Brody.”
Texas team’s leader chuckled. “Your bag is in the back, Gigi. If you need anything else, Maddox said to have Owen charge it to the company card.”
“How long will we be in Mexico?”
“Plan on four days. We hope it won’t take that long, though. Logan has a hot date at the end of the week.”
“Don’t jinx it,” Logan said. “I’ve been trying to get this woman to go out with me for months.”
“This one is smart enough not to fall for your charm.”
Logan snorted. “No one ever accused me of being charming.” He lifted one shoulder. “The truth is, she’s too good for me.”
“Don’t sell yourself short,” Logan’s teammate, Max, said.
“So, Gigi,” Sawyer said. “How long have you and Owen been together?”
“We’ve been friends since high school, but recently started dating.”
The team of former law enforcement officers continued to ask questions about Gigi, her work, and her guests. When Brody drove into the parking lot of a luxury hotel, Owen’s eyebrows rose. Maddox was footing the bill for this?
Owen helped Gigi from the vehicle and retrieved their bags. They followed the Texas team into the lobby to register, and discovered Zane had already reserved rooms for them.
After riding the elevator to the sixth floor, Owen used a key card to open the suite door and ushered Gigi inside. He whistled softly. “Nice.”
“Oh, wow.” Gigi moved past him into the center of the living area and studied the room. “So elegant and lovely.”
“I prefer your B & B.”
“Why?”
“Several reasons. The most important one is that you’re there. Your B & B is comfortable. It feels like a home instead of a hotel. You also specialize in customer service. Most of your guests return whenever they’re in the area. That says something about you and how you treat your guests.”
“This hotel does the same thing. I’ve always wanted to stay here but couldn’t afford the price tag. The hotel has a stellar reputation in the hospitality industry.”
“You treat your guests like family. That’s what brings them back again and again.”
The door to the suite opened, and Brody and Jesse walked in with their gear. “Have you chosen a room yet, Gigi?” Jesse asked.
She shook her head. “You choose. I’m sure both will be as incredible as the living room.”
The medic glanced at Owen, an eyebrow raised.
“I’ll check the rooms. Be right back.” He explored both rooms before returning. “Take the room on the left, Jesse.”
“Aren’t they exactly alike?” Gigi asked.
“Your room is better protected.” He picked up her bag. “I’ll carry this into your room. Evaluate the clothes you packed. If you need something else, we’ll find a store nearby and buy what you need.”
After he set her bag on her bed, he turned toward the door.
“Owen?”
He stopped without turning around. Fury and fear coiled in his stomach, making him want to barf. Owen needed to get his emotions under control before he talked to Gigi about the mission. “What is it, G?”
“Are you angry with me?”
He closed his eyes a moment, fighting against the instinct to turn and reassure her. Owen shook his head. “Check your clothes. Come find me when you’re finished.” Hopefully, he’d have his emotions well in hand by that time.
CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Gigi stared at the bedroom door, the door Owen had closed so quietly that it made her wince. Owen’s action spoke volumes about the level of his anger. She swallowed hard. Her Marine’s temper was past the boiling point.
Turning, she opened her bag. After laying out her clothes, Gigi took stock of the outfits she brought to Texas and sighed. Not enough to get through four days. She wasn’t surprised. Zane had scared her when he called to inform her of Owen’s injury on the mission to free Toni and Ellis. Even with his assurance that the injury was minor, Gigi needed to see it for herself.
Her eyes narrowed. She still hadn’t seen the injury, a fact she planned to rectify when Jesse changed the bandage. Since Brent wanted Owen to go to Mexico, he must be confident in Owen’s ability to do the job.
After repacking her clothes, Gigi freshened up, mentally preparing for the discussion with Owen. Her lips curved. The word discussion was a mild description
