are you?” Rhys demanded, swiveling me around to face him.
I took a step back and folded my arms across my chest. “You first.”
“Duh, we’re demons,” Nix answered.
“Obviously,” I responded. “I mean, what do you want with me and my friend?”
“We don’t have anything to do with your friend,” he protested.
I raised my eyebrow. “I don’t believe you.” They might not have directly been involved but it wasn’t a coincidence that Lennox went missing the day after these guys showed up in my life.
“Blayde, what are you?” Rhys demanded again, his hand going to my wrist, wrapping his fingers around it. “Are you fae?” I suddenly felt magic flow over my skin and I gasped, my fingers flicking in response, counteracting his magic.
“You just tried to magic me into telling you the truth.” I growled out. “That was an assholey thing to do.”
He scowled. “How did you know?”
“Because.” I raised my eyebrow. “I know things.” I stepped closer towards him, so close I could feel his breath over my skin. He met my gaze, not intimidated by me stepping into his space. His deep, grey-blue eyes were focused completely on me, fascinated and intrigued. Yet, there was almost a physical wall inside his gaze, blocking off his true emotions. He was hiding something, but I wasn’t sure it was anything bad. Something told me he was holding a lot back from showing his true self.
I reached up and traced my fingers over his cheek, infusing a warmth into my touch. His lips parted in surprise but otherwise he didn’t react. I held his gaze. “What are you afraid of, Newb?”
For a brief moment his wall was down and I saw everything. His pain and anguish. And then, a flash of desire before his walls were back up, his eyes as hard as stone. “Nothing. And my name’s not Newb. It’s Rhys.”
“Okay, Rhys.” I just smiled, a mysterious one, like I knew everything but wouldn’t tell the others.
I broke the stare off between us and turned away from him, looking towards the trees and the house looming in the distance. “We’re going there?”
Both Maverick and Nix looked at Rhys. I guess he was their leader or something. I didn’t wait for him to answer but started walking towards the house as Rhys made a protesting noise. “Why do you think you know everything?”
I shrugged. “That’s the only place to go.” The demons quickly met my stride, quiet for a moment but that didn’t last long.
“You’re right, you know. That’s where we’re going.” Maverick said.
“Shut your trap, Maverick.” Rhys snapped out, irritated about something. Who the fock knew what? Maybe he didn’t like that I’d seen through him.
“So,” Nix interjected. “I’ve never met a talking cat.”
“Meh, you’re better off not knowing what they think.” I noticed that Tuddle was racing through the trees up ahead of us, chasing a gnome. The gnome was clutching his hat and running as fast as his cute little legs would take him. Too bad he was too far away to yell out to him. Tuddle would never actually eat him—his tastes were richer than that, like bacon and tuna, not raw gnome. The hunter in him loved the chase though.
“Were you ever going to tell us you were an other?” Nix asked.
“An other? Like a ghost or a zombie or something?” I wrinkled my nose at the way he was describing us.
He clicked his tongue. “You know what I mean.”
“Nope.”
“No you don’t know what I mean, or no, you weren’t going to tell us?”
“No,” I simply responded. He could figure out what that meant.
Suddenly a poof of smoke appeared in the air before us, the smell of sulfur accompanying it. I stopped, my hand up, anticipating the arrival of a new demon and prepared to fight. “Ah ha!” Nix grabbed my hand. “You are fae. Fae always fight with their hands.”
“As compared to demons, who always fight with their dicks?”
Nix didn’t have the chance to react because it was interrupted with Maverick's laughter. Nix turned to Maverick. “Why the hell are you laughing? You have a demon dick, just like me.”
A demon dick? What the hell does that mean? It had been a very long time since I’d seen Lennox’s dick, and I’d tried to scrub the memory of walking in on him in the bathroom from my memory. But I hadn’t noticed anything strange though.
The new guy’s sultry voice interrupted my thoughts. “What do we have here?”
It was then that I noticed the demon’s black eyes
