Mafia King (Young Irish Rebels #2) - Vi Carter Page 0,98
think his dad is bad, but whenever they chat recently, Shay always looks troubled. When I ask him what’s going on, he tells me it’s nothing.
“Let me help you.” Shay’s mom pulls me out of my thoughts as we start to prepare the salad together. It’s so easy going with her, and we fall into a rhythm talking about the house and the honeymoon that Shay and I have yet to take. I’ve never left Ireland, so I’m excited.
“I’m thinking of Scotland. Shay wants to stay here in Ireland.”
Shay’s mom laughs. “Neither of you are very adventurous.”
“Where did you and Connor go?”
Shay’s mom smiles and stops chopping the onions. “Africa. We went on a safari; after that, we spent a week in Paris. Connor was very romantic.” Shay’s mom’s smile is contagious, and I can’t stop the smile that covers my own face.
“Maybe Paris could be fun,” I say while thinking of the city of romance.
We finish preparing the salad, but there’s no sign of Shay or his dad. “I’ll go get the boys,” I say to Ava as she finishes setting the table. I’m not sure where they are, but I’m assuming that they would be in Shay’s office. When I look in, it's empty. I can hear their voices like a low rumble. They’re outside. Leaving the office, I make my way to the side door that’s in the laundry room.
I reach for the door handle but stop.
“I’m worried, Shay.” Shay’s dad’s voice is clear. The window in the room is open, and I can smell the cigarette smoke.
“You make it sound like hell is about to open its gates, Da.”
“It is. You think Liam is bad. He has nothing on Richard. Richard is a younger version of Liam, but he’s ruthless, son, and unpredictable.”
“I can handle it.” Shay sounds irritated. “You keep going on about Richard, but remember, I’ve met him. I know what I’m up against.”
“No, you don’t.” Shay’s dad’s words are growled, and then silence falls.
I can picture them glaring at each other.
“I’ll be careful.”
“I’d prefer if you and Emma left for a while.”
“And go where?” Shay sounds really angry.
“Come back up North. You’ll be safe.”
Shay’s sneer doesn’t sound friendly. “I’m not afraid of Richard, Da.”
“You should be. When he comes to take his seat, I don’t think anything will remain the same.”
A chill raced up my spine.
“You saw him do something first hand?” Shay asks.
I can hear Shay’s mom call me. She’s probably wondering what’s taking me so long.
“No, but Darragh did, and I’ve heard too much about him. You know why he was sent away?”
“Yes.” Shay sounds shaken now.
Shay’s mom’s calls are closer, and as much as I want to continue listening, I don’t want to get caught. I grip the handle and open the door.
“Shay?”
Both of them look at me, and I force a smile. “Food’s ready.”
Connor enters first, and Shay follows.
“Everything okay?” I ask.
“Everything is fine, love.” Shay smiles at me, but I’m starting to get used to spotting the smiles that are reserved for moments like these. Moments he won’t share with me. Shay follows me, and before we enter the kitchen, his hand tightens around my waist, and he drags me back into his chest.
“Thanks for being so good to my ma.”
I turn in Shay’s arms. “I really enjoy having her here.” I step up on the tip of my toes.
“I don’t fucking deserve you.” Shay presses a kiss to my lips.
“I know,” I say, and his laughter has everything in me tightening.
We enter the kitchen, and Shay's mom smiles at us. Once we sit down, we start to eat, and the talk of Richard slowly disappears as we sit, eat, and have a few drinks into the early hours of the morning.
Leaning into Shay, I feel so blessed to have a man like him at my side. When he looks down at me, I see so much love in his eyes. I honestly never thought love could fill me up so much. But it does.

Enjoy this book? You can make a big difference
Reviews are the most powerful tools in my arsenal when it comes to getting attention for my books. Much as I’d like to, I don’t have the financial muscle of a New York publisher.
(Not yet, anyway.)
But I do have something much more powerful and effective than that, and it’s something that those publishers would kill to get their hands on.
A committed and loyal bunch of readers.
Honest reviews of my book help bring them to the attention of other readers.
So if you’ve enjoyed this book I would be very grateful if you could spend just five minutes leaving a review.
Thank you very much!
