Good luck, hon,
The Love Vixen
“I’m not sure that is the advice she was looking for. It’s like The Love Vixen was encouraging her to play dress up with her husband,” I said.
“That’s why I think you need to write her. She doesn’t say what you want to hear, or what you expect. She gives her impartial opinion,” Allison said.
I appreciated Allison trying to help, but this wasn’t the way for me to go. “I don’t need to write a stranger. I know what I need to do, I’m just not sure how to make it happen.”
“Would you like me to write her for you? I mean, I’m your BFF, after all. I know what you want, probably better than you do,” she said.
“Then as my BFF you should know that I would never write to The Love Vixen. I handle things myself,” I said.
“Or avoid them altogether. I’ll text you her information, just in case you change your mind,” Allison said.
I rolled my eyes. Not going to happen. “Thanks for listening.”
“Why do I get the feeling you’re not going to take my advice?” she asked.
Because I’m not. “You never know. Maybe one day you’ll be reading The Love Vixen and say, hey, that letter is from my BFF.”
“Oh, don’t tease me. Now you have to write in. I mean, I have to know what she would tell you.”
“That makes one of us.”
Allison laughed and said, “Now I can’t wait for tomorrow’s edition. I bet you’ll get addicted to reading her, too.”
I hated to admit, The Love Vixen had piqued my interest. I might not need her help, but reading her column would at least be entertaining.
It might make my problems seem small.
Chapter 4
Jack
“Hi, Jack. You’re looking well,” Robert Rejewski said.
“Yes, I am. Which is why I asked you to meet me for lunch. Your daughter seemed to be under the impression that I might not be well. And if I’m correct, that misinformation came from you. Can you explain why?” I asked.
“A simple misunderstanding, that’s all,” he replied.
I was no longer a teenager concerned that his coach might get angry. “I believe you knew what you were doing. I’m just here to find out why.”
“Are you saying you weren’t happy to see Deidre again?” he asked.
I glared at Robert. “What does that have to do with you lying to her, to us?”
He sighed. “It has everything to do with it. I’m trying to right a wrong from years ago.”
“By lying to your daughter?” And involving me in it.
“She is so driven and focused on her business that I don’t think she’d have listened to me if I told her she should reach out and call you.”
“That’s her choice to make. Not yours, not mine-hers. She’s a grown woman who doesn’t like being manipulated any more than I do. If you want to fix this, you should ask her to lunch, and tell her the truth,” I suggested. Because she deserves it.
“And tell her what? That I think you and she belong together?” Robert said.
That sure as hell wasn’t what I expected him to say. After all, he was the one who had made it impossible for us to be together when we were younger. “That’s what all this is about? You’re playing matchmaker?” Robert shrugged and I added, “Stick to coaching.”
I was pissed to have been played by him like this. And worst of all, I was meeting with Robert now and I never let Deidre know. Someone had to tell her the truth. Although I’d like to be the one, it really should come from Robert.
“It was my coaching that ruined your chances before.”
“If Deidre and I were meant to be together, we would’ve been. Neither of us need or want your help. Is that understood?” I snarled. “I can’t speak for Deidre, but I know I don’t appreciate anyone playing games with my life.”
“I know. I need to talk to her. Maybe you can come to dinner with her tomorrow night and I can explain it to you both,” Robert said.
I can’t believe this guy. “You’re not hearing me are you?” He was still trying to get his way, even while I was telling him to stop. “I wouldn’t wait till tomorrow night. I suggest you ask her to talk earlier.” Deidre had agreed to have dinner with me tomorrow night and I wanted the truth out in the open before that. No sense in a date she agreed to without the full story.
“But she is busy. It’s
