asked with a chuckle as he grinned up at me. “Wow, I can honestly say that in my thirty-four years, I’ve never heard anyone call it that before.”
So that took care of the question of his age. But never mind how old he was! I was so embarrassed, I couldn’t even focus on the fact that I’d just called his enormous... member… a sausage. All I wanted to do was get the hell away from him so I could be embarrassed all by myself. “Just get up and let’s get back to the station so I can get rid of you,” I muttered as I watched him stand and cover himself with my jacket, thank God.
“Sausage!” he said again as he erupted into a new fit of laughter.
I just shook my head.
Chapter Eighteen
We made it back to the station house.
Once there, I decided to make some hot tea.
There was still the problem of Alex’s clothing, or lack thereof. Which only made me wonder why he’d so quickly agreed to perform his werewolf stunt in the first place if he knew he’d have a clothing conundrum afterward...
So now, Alex was wearing a towel I’d found wrapped around his middle. And I had to admit, his upper body was definitely a sight to behold. His pecs were beyond broad, in direct competition with his biceps and washboard stomach. He gave Magic Mike a run for his money. And that was saying something because I had such a thing for Magic Mike that I’d watched it going on maybe eleven times now.
“You and every other woman on the planet.”
“Ugh, you’re the worst,” I said, heat flooding my cheeks because it wasn’t like I wanted anyone to know about my Magic Mike fascination.
“But thanks for the compliments. Glad you like my body.”
I rolled my eyes.
“If it makes any difference, I’m pretty partial to yours, too,” he continued as he leaned forward, trying to see the back of my pants. “I mean, your uniform covers way too much but from what I’ve been able to see, you’ve got some great… assets.”
“Can we please stop talking about this?” I asked as I shook my head. My attention fell to the towel around his waist and I couldn’t help but think this whole thing had been the perfect setup.
Alex leaned against the cell bars behind him and watched as I added honey to my tea. “You caught me, Chief Hot Pants. My plan was to get naked in front of you.”
I looked up at him, and couldn’t help but note the shit-eating grin on his face. “It was, wasn’t it?”
He grinned broader. “Like I said, you caught me.”
I shook my head and snapped the top of the honey bear closed, leaned back on the top of the desk, cradling the cup, and watched Alex through the rising steam. “You’re a pig,” I said.
“No, I’m a wolf,” he rebutted, and held my gaze. Suddenly, he wasn’t smiling. “And now you know.”
I looked away, and sipped my nearly scalding tea. “Now, I know.” And my thoughts started wandering back to the dreams I’d been having since I moved here. “I want to ask you something,” I started.
“So ask me.”
“I… ever since I moved to Hope, I started having these… these dreams. And in them, I would see a huge black wolf that looked… exactly like you do in your wolf form. Every night the wolf would talk to me in thoughts—telling me he wouldn’t hurt me and that he… needed me.”
Alex’s eyebrows reached for the ceiling. “Sounds like you shouldn’t be talking to me, but with a therapist instead.”
“This isn’t funny and I’m being serious.”
His smile dropped. “My apologies.”
“What do you know about my dreams?” I demanded. “Did you send them to me or something?”
“No, I can’t do that.”
“Then?”
He shrugged. “I don’t know what to tell you other than maybe you’re more psychically aware than you thought you were?”
I cocked my head to the side as I considered it. There were those moments when it was just me and the victims. The moments when I relied on something that defied logic—something deep within me that allowed me to bond with them, to understand more than the facts allowed. Maybe it was a psychic connection? Maybe it wasn’t.
“When I touched Donovan’s body, I saw… things.”
“What sort of things?”
“Images, visions I guess you could call them. I think… I think I saw the two of you when you were boys and you were throwing water at each other in a creek
