figure out what I did wrong,” he said, pulling away from Marie and running his hand over his goatee. He scrubbed the underside of his chin with his fingers, rubbing the bristles.
“You mean, you don’t know?” Trish looked at him almost suspiciously, flipping a long lock of blonde hair off her shoulder. They had the same hair and eyes, looking enough alike, some people thought they were twins, and it could be a little disconcerting to have one of his own Looks directed back at him.
“I mean, I think I misjudged the situation a little, but I don’t know why she snapped the way she did.” He made a face. “That… might be downplaying things a little. I get why she snapped. I misunderstood what she wanted from me, and I tried to take things in the wrong direction, but I don’t get why she was so pissed off, she actually kicked me out of the house for the night. Especially since it meant she had to put the kids to bed and what started the argument was me asking her to put the kids to bed.”
“Well, this should be fun,” Marie said, grinning with amusement, although her dark eyes were concerned. Both Trish and Marie loved Felicity as much as they loved Logan. They understood how out of character it was for her to actually kick him out, even for a night. “Want a cup of tea while you tell us all about it?”
“Sure, why not?” He sighed heavily again. It felt like he was sighing a lot lately. Pathetic. “Got any whiskey to go in that tea?”
His sister-in-law snorted. “As if I would have it any other way.”
Five minutes later, Logan was feeling a little better. Maybe Trish and Marie weren’t as doting and sympathetic as he’d expected, but Marie had a heavy hand with the whiskey and had set out chocolate chip cookies on the coffee table. They sat down on one side of their cushy leather couch to cuddle while he sat on the other.
“Okay,” Trish said, leaning back against her wife. She pointed a demanding finger at him. “Time to spill. Let’s start at the beginning. What happened after you came home from work?”
“Well, Felicity was in the kitchen, making dinner with the kids, and they came to say hello, like always. We had dinner, then—”
“Nope, back up.” Marie wagged her finger at him. “What did you guys talk about during dinner? What kind of day did she have? Did she seem stressed? You’re skipping an awful lot of important information here.”
“Um…” Casting his mind back, Logan tried to remember. “She said she had a pretty good day. Oh, except for these two guys who are always mansplaining stuff to her.” Both Trish and Marie made faces. “But she said other than that it was good. She seemed a little tired maybe… but we talked about going away at the end of this month. She wants to go on a trip with her friends soon, too. Actually, she brought that up before we talked about going away together. That’s how we got on the topic. But we agreed we’d go away together first.”
Before he could go on, Trish held up her hand.
“Stop. Didn’t you just go on a trip with your friends? Why does her trip have to wait?”
“We don’t have the money for an overnight sitter for two long weekends coming up.” Logan shrugged ruefully. Hmm. Trish and Marie stared at him, their expressions reminiscent of Felicity’s when he’d reminded her of that fact. “What?”
“Why would you need a sitter when Felicity’s away?” Trish asked. “Didn’t she just watch the kids the whole weekend while you were away?”
“Well, yeah, but if she’s going to go away, I’d like to get some me-time while she’s gone. I don’t really get to have the house to myself that often. Even an overnight sitter for one night is expensive, though.” Both Marie and Trish gave each other a look, stirring his irritation. “What?”
“No, no, go on,” Marie said. Her tone put him on the defensive, but he didn’t have time to address whatever was making them get all judgey when she waved her hand at him to continue. “Now, tell us what happened after dinner.”
So, he did, right up until he completely misjudged what Felicity was after and tried to go into Dom mode, threatening to spank her. Both of them facepalmed. Yeah, he got that he’d messed up, but he still thought Felicity’s reaction was overly
