has even been sleeping through the night.”
“Good, if I hadn’t heard an update in the next week, I was going to ask,” Jacob said, closing his eyes.
Levi smiled, brushing a stray lock of hair from Jacob’s face. As much as he had been wary of working for the DDI, he had to admit there had to be something good about it if someone like Jacob worked so loyally for them. He had been just as worried about the medium they’d had to track down a couple of weeks ago. The poor girl’s abilities were so potent, ghosts and spirits could actually touch her, and sometimes, the people around her.
It had left her isolated, traumatized, and at the end of her rope by the time they’d found her. Levi knew all too well what it was like to have a spirit, or in her case, spirits, who haunted your life. He didn’t know how the DDI could help her, but they’d taken her to a facility which apparently was ghost free where she would be slowly taught to control her abilities. Levi would check up on that for himself when he insisted on a personal visit soon.
“Guess that means we’re work free and worry free for a little longer,” Jacob said contentedly.
“Whenever you say something like that, I can’t tell if you’re trying to get me to take a nap with you or take my pants off,” Levi informed him.
“As if we can’t have one and then the other.”
“Yes, but it’s nice to know which order is expected beforehand.”
Jacob nuzzled closer. “To be fair, you do smell pretty good right now.”
Which was a strong indicator of where this little cuddlefest was headed. Not that Levi minded. It was hard to argue when a man like Jacob was intent on getting laid. Well, Levi found it impossible really, and the fact that it usually resulted in a heavy amount of spooning was nothing to turn his nose up at either.
“If you let me put the groceries away first, I’ll let you sex me up on any surface you like.”
“Mmm, even if I pick one at random?”
“Especially one at random.”
Jacob chuckled, kissing Levi’s side. “I knew there was a reason I loved you.”
God, when are you just going to suck it up and propose already?
Jacob’s eyes snapped open, darting up to Levi’s face. “Marriage? You want to get married?”
Levi jerked. “Me? I never…”
Jacob sat up so fast he tipped Levi onto the floor with a thump. “You just asked when I was going to propose. I heard it!”
What the fuck?
Jacob jerked back. “How are you doing that?”
Levi gaped, unable to comprehend what he was witnessing. “I...that’s not me Jacob...that’s…”
Me.
Jacob’s face drained of color. “Lou?”
Jacob, can you hear me?
“Holy shit,” Jacob whispered hoarsely. “He sounds like you.”
“Always has,” Levi said faintly.
No one but Levi has ever been able to hear me.
Jacob stared, and to Levi’s continued surprise, he was staring exactly at where Lou’s voice was coming from. He could hear the shock in the spirit’s voice, and he quite honestly couldn’t blame him. Even his parents had never heard him, but then again, his father hadn’t been convinced of Lou’s existence before his death, and his mother had always been half-terrified of him.
But Jacob was completely different. He believed completely in Lou and held no fear of him. Over the past several months, he had adopted speaking to Lou, using Levi as a go-between. Lou had told Levi that sometimes Jacob talked to him when Levi wasn’t in the room, knowing he’d never hear Lou’s responses, but talking to him all the same. There had never been anyone like Jacob in their lives.
Levi felt a smile spread over his face. “Lou, did you...I think you’ve bonded with him.”
Jacob’s face gained color again, and a flicker of something like hope lit in his eyes. “You’re saying I can hear him because he likes me?”
“No, I’m saying I think you can hear him because he likes, trusts, and loves you.”
Oh, no, no, this isn’t some weird threesome thing. I am not in love with your boyfriend.
Jacob laughed. “Holy shit, he really is as funny as you make him out to be.”
Levi froze. “Oh, fuck.”
Lou’s voice was positively gleeful.
Oh, ho ho, now I can talk to him directly!
“Oh, fuck,” Levi repeated.
Jacob sprung forward, gathering Levi up and kissing him soundly. “I love you, you know that?”
Levi laughed softly. “Uh, yeah. I love you too, Jacob.”
“And you know what, I love you too, Lou, just, ya know, not in the same way.”
At least I don’t have to have the awkward ‘you can’t fuck a spirit’ conversation with you.
Jacob laughed, wrapping his arms tight around Levi’s shoulders and bringing him in for another kiss. This one, he deepened almost immediately and Levi felt the man’s excitement fuel a sudden burst of heat and desire.
And that’s my cue to go stare at some trees.
“And he’s gone,” Levi murmured, sensing his presence depart.
“Huh, didn’t feel that,” Jacob said.
“Maybe you’ll start to sense him too, in time.”
“Think so?”
“I don’t know, hell, I didn’t even know it was possible for someone else to hear him, so fuck it, maybe.”
Jacob laughed and kissed him again. “You know this means our motto really was a good one, right?”
Levi took his hand, squeezing it. “Together?”
“Together.”
That was a promise Levi knew he’d never get tired of hearing. With Jacob and Lou, he had everything he ever wanted.
