referrals looked promising, so I would be smart to take advantage of my downtime now.
“She’s so going to get some,” Mac sang, and I threw a cracker at her.
“Thanks, I needed that,” she said, popping it in her mouth and crunching down.
“Should I text Josh or do you want to?” Cassie asked me.
“I can text him,” I said.
“You’ll probably get a lot more out of him. Bet he has all of your favorite foods sent to the hotel room,” Cassie said.
“As he should. That man caused a total disaster,” Mac said.
“He’s never slipped up like that before. I promise you, Evie, he’s usually much more on the ball,” Cassie said. “And the guys are making him work for their forgiveness. They paid their tour manager his full salary and told him to stay home so Josh could act as their tour manager and grovel whenever they asked.”
“Oh shit, that’s awesome,” Mac said.
“That’s one of the reasons that I’ve forgiven him. He didn’t try to brush his mistake away or put the blame on someone else. That takes a lot. Especially for an uber-confident guy like Josh.” From the few interactions I’d had with the man before the disaster, he’d struck me as someone who always knew what was going on and who managed Steelwolf with precision.
“Jax is driving him crazy,” Cassie said, and we all laughed again.
I could only imagine what torments Jax had come up with.
“Okay, you text Josh and get everything set up and James can hang out with me for a few days. Also, when are you moving into Tris’ place?” Cassie asked.
He’d asked me to move in when he’d finally realized I wasn’t joining him on tour. Something about wanting me wrapped up in his sheets and sleeping in his bed, even if he wasn’t there. I’d agreed to start packing my place. The lease was up in six months and he’d said he’d pay it until it ended if I wanted him to.
I knew that was his way of letting me keep a safety net in case everything went crazy. I mean, we’d only been together for three months. That was way too early for moving in together, even though we were in love.
“I’m still packing my place. Then we’ll move in. James can’t wait to sleep in his dinosaur bed every night,” I said, with a smile.
“Have I mentioned how happy I am that you two are together? And that you brought James into our lives,” Cassie said, giving me a side hug.
“Me too,” I said, trying not to get choked up. Through all the insanity, I’d found a family who welcomed me and James and my mom in with open arms. Sometimes I still had to pinch myself at how far we’d come in three short months.
“Now, text that manager and get ready to go to Chicago in a week. And don’t tell Tris that you’re coming. The surprise will be so worth it,” Cassie said with a grin.
“I’m not sure I can keep that a secret for five days,” I said.
“You totally can,” Mac said.
“We’ll see,” I said, before I swiped my phone on and texted Josh.
I’d managed to not spill the beans to Tristan over the last five days. And it’d been rough. We talked or video chatted every night when they weren’t doing a show and at least a quick call or text on show days. From our call last night, I didn’t think he knew, and I’d told him I had a few new clients today to keep him from wondering why I wasn’t answering his call while I was flying to Chicago.
I arrived two hours before they were supposed to go on and Josh had a car waiting for me. A freaking limo. The man was working on those brownie points, especially when my favorite wine and a plate of brownies were in the car.
Traffic was a nightmare, and I made it to the arena thirty minutes before they were supposed to go on. The opening band was going full blast when Josh met me at a side door.
“Hey, Evie. Glad you could make it,” he said, somewhat subdued for typical Josh. “And I really wanted to apologize in person for everything that happened. I fucked up and whatever you need, just ask, okay?”
“How bad is Jax tormenting you?” I asked.
Josh shook his head. “That man is a damn menace. If he wasn’t such a fucking fantastic front man, I wouldn’t let him get away with half the
