me. I get out of the bed next, readying myself for an argument. “I give them the benefit of the doubt because they saved us. They carried us from that boat and gave us medical treatment. They haven’t harmed us at all. They have given us no reason at all for us to think they have brainwashed us and actually—” I scoff and hit the side of my head when I stare at her “—Do you know how crazy you sound? Brainwashing? Are you kidding me? And how could you think that when I am standing here telling you that I saw Mom and Dad die. Me.” I slam my hand against my chest, signaling to myself. “I did. While you and Victoria were in the cabin like you were supposed to be, I wasn’t. I experienced wave after wave hitting us in the face. I saw the cut on Mom’s forehead as we held one another’s hands. We fell off the side, and I held on to the rail, Veronica. Half of my body was engulfed in freezing cold water, and I watched the waves take her away while she screamed. Did you hear her scream?” A tear drips down my face as I take a step closer to her.
“Stop it! Stop. The both of you, just stop,” Victoria pleads, crawling off her bed to Veronica’s since it’s closer to where we are standing.
But I don’t stop. “Were you the one who watched the mast swing and hit dad in the back of the head? Did you watch his limp body fall overboard?”
“Violet!” Victoria scolds me.
“Did you?” I scream at Veronica, and she jumps from the sound of my voice. Her eyes are locked on the floor, too afraid to look at me. “No. You didn’t. Don’t stand there and say these people are brainwashing us when I lived the truth. These men have been kind. They could have left us out there to die. It wouldn’t have taken that much longer. So maybe instead of being a brat, be fucking grateful that we are alive!” I yell at the top of my lungs. My voice cracks, and my throat is raw from the amount of force I have to use.
Veronica slides down the wall onto the floor and pulls her legs to her chest, burying her face between her knees as she cries. “I don’t want them to be dead. I didn’t get to say goodbye.”
I kneel on the ground and wrap my arms around her. “I didn’t either. It all happened so fast.”
“What are we going to do?” she sniffles.
I sit back and shrug my shoulders. “I don’t know, but at least we are together.”
“Do you really trust these guys?” Victoria asks, sitting cross-legged on the bed.
“I do. There is one, his name is Kansas. He’s been very kind to me, so if you need anything, I’m sure he will help you two too.”
“Everything okay in here?” a man with an eye-patch asks.
A man I’ve never seen before.
I hold my hand out to Victoria, and she climbs off the bed and huddles against my side. “Who are you?” I ask, spreading my arms to protect my sisters.
His eye darts back and forth between us and he grins. “I’m One-Eye. I’m a friend of Kansas. He had to go on a run today, since he is acting VP, but he wanted me to make sure you ladies were alright.”
A slender dark haired woman stands next to him and my defenses settle a bit. She has bags of clothes in each of her hands. “I got it from here, One-Eye.” She pats him on his giant shoulder that looks like it could break her neck with a shove. “I think it’s better if they talk to a woman.”
“I can speak woman,” One-Eye grumbles, displeased that he’s doubted.
Victoria snickers quietly, and then hisses when I pinch her to shut up.
“One-Eye,” the woman pushes his body, and he doesn’t move. “Go. I got this.”
“Arrow said he would give some of his juice boxes—”
“I don’t care what Arrow said right now. Let me handle this, please. I have some experience, remember?”
“Fine, but don’t come running to me when you can’t speak woman.” He points a finger in her face, and she pinches her lips shut to hide a smile as he bounds down the hall.
She enters the room and closes the door behind her, setting the bags on the floor. “Hi. I’m sorry I haven’t come by sooner to introduce myself, but
