stayed upstairs.”
I watched as John, Jefferson, and Judd each got into their fancy, expensive cars and drove off.
Teddy got into his gigantic police SUV and followed.
Silas hugged me tighter.
Nothing was ever going to be easy, was it?
We went back to the restaurant and the place was in an uproar.
One call from Tyler to Ma set everyone off about what had happened.
“Let me get my hands on those pricks,” Zeke growled.
“Stop it, Zeke,” Edith said.
“He’s right,” Thomas said. “It’s about time we remind them who we are.”
“Oh, yeah, smart,” Ma said. “A bunch of old men trying to fight each other.”
“Hey, I have a question,” Lucy said. “What’s a prick?”
“Thanks for that, Zeke,” Tyler said.
“About time the kid realizes what’s what,” Zeke said. “You know what a prick is, Lucy? If their last name is Lovor or Rohrick, they’re a prick!”
“Zeke!” Ma yelled. “Stop!”
Behind me I saw Crosby hurrying into the restaurant.
As he pushed the door with his shoulder, he was buttoning his shirt.
I broke away from Silas. “Are you kidding me, Crosby?”
“What?”
“You’re getting dressed? What the…”
“He was still in bed,” Tyler said.
“Yeah, with some woman,” I said. “Really?”
“I slept in,” Crosby said.
“No, you didn’t,” I said. “You were in bed. You were sleeping in someone…”
“Let it go, Mila,” Crosby snapped.
“Hey,” Silas growled, rushing to my side. “That’s enough.”
Edith then let out a loud enough whistle to rattle the windows.
Everyone stopped talking and looked at her.
“That’s enough out of everyone,” she said. “We’re in this together as a family. That includes you, Silas. No way we’re going to let the Lovor family bother you. They’re all hot air. They can’t and won’t do a thing. If we let them get to us like this, then they win. So everyone shut up, take a seat, and let’s celebrate the fact that we have two new members of our family on the way.”
“Let me text Olivia and see how she’s feeling,” Tyler said.
Crosby put distance between me and him.
Before I could sit at the counter, Ma grabbed my arm.
When I looked into her eyes, my heart sank. “What’s wrong?”
“Mila, I need to talk to you about something.”
Edith poured coffees for everyone, recruiting Thomas to help.
Silas offered and Edith politely smiled and told him he was better off sitting than helping.
I asked where Anna had gone to and Edith said she got a call about covering a shift at the hospital so she went home to nap for a few hours before going in to work.
Ma dragged me into the kitchen where it was just me and her.
She instantly began to pace, trying to bite her nails.
“What’s wrong?” I asked again.
“I’m trying to find the words here. Trying to make sense of it.”
“Sense of what?”
Ma froze and looked around. “Is someone missing from here?”
“Olivia…”
“Not just her, Mila. Think about it.”
I started counting my family members.
I mean, Jace wasn’t here. Max wasn’t here. Evan wasn’t here.
Their father - Arthur - he wasn’t here.
“Dammit, Mila,” Ma said. “Michael. Michael isn’t here.”
I gasped. “I knew that! I swear!”
“I’m sure.”
“Ma, I’m sorry. I’m having a messed-up day here, okay?”
“I know you are. It’s not about remembering Michael or not. It’s that he’s not here.”
I gasped. “Silas told me.”
“Told you what?”
“That you and Michael were arguing.”
“Damn,” Ma sighed. She shut her eyes for a second. “Things have been touchy. Yes.”
“Ma, I’m so sorry. Why didn’t you say anything?”
“You’re pregnant, Mila. You don’t need my relationship drama in your life.”
“But I don’t like hearing you’re having issues.”
“It’s not about having issues,” Ma said. “Shit. I’m already a hypocrite by talking to you right now.”
Ma looked really flustered.
“Just tell me what’s actually happening, Ma.”
“I think he’s cheating on me!” she yelled.
“What?”
“I think Michael is cheating on me.”
“Oh, Ma,” I said, opening my arms to hug her.
She grabbed my wrists. “Mila, look at me. I don’t have proof of it. Yet.”
“Still…”
“No, I’m not done talking,” Ma said. “I hate to do this to you…”
“Do what?” I asked.
“I have an idea on how to catch him,” Ma said. “I have to see it for myself. To really know. You know?”
“Okay…”
Ma swallowed hard. “I need your help, Mila.”
Chapter Twenty-Four
SILAS
I walked into the bedroom to find Mila.
I heard the shower water running, but by the time I got to the door, it turned off.
Damn.
I missed my chance to join her.
Even with that missed chance at a little shower fun, a smile still grazed my face.
As much as I didn’t want to say anything out loud, things had gotten quiet. Not perfectly quiet. I was still
