I said. “Everything I’m doing here is legal and that’s it. I’m updating the house. Nothing is changing.”
“I think we’ll be the judge of that,” Judd said. “Of course, if you want to do this the hard way, we can involve lawyers. That’ll take… years…”
“I swear on my life if you fuck with my family,” I growled as I stepped toward Judd.
He stepped back, missed a step, and almost went toppling down.
“Arrest him for attacking my brother!” John cried out.
That’s when Teddy Rohrick grabbed my left wrist.
Chapter Twenty-Three
MILA
I heard the commotion out front and I stepped outside to see Teddy Rohrick holding Silas’s hands behind his back.
Without hesitation I ran up to Teddy and touched his arm. “What are you doing?”
“Don’t touch me, Mila,” Teddy said.
“Don’t talk to her like that,” Silas growled.
“This is insane,” Tyler said. “Silas didn’t touch Judd. You know that, Teddy.”
“What’s happening here?” I asked.
I looked at John Lovor, Jefferson Lovor, and Judd Lovor.
My teeth started to chatter.
“Silas didn’t do anything wrong here,” Teddy said. “I said to keep this calm.”
“We are being calm, Teddy,” Jefferson said.
“Get off our property,” I said.
“Miss Justa,” John Lovor said to me.
I pointed at him. “No. You don’t get to be here. This is what you did with the ranch too. You tried to steal it from my father. Then you tried to bully Crosby into selling it to you.”
“Mila, stop,” Tyler said.
“I’m not going to stop,” I said. I looked at Jefferson. “And you, Mr. Mayor. What do you want? Huh?”
“I’m just making sure my town is safe, Mila,” Jefferson said. “We all know Mr. Rhodes had a situation too. Accusations.”
“Oh, fucking hell,” Silas said.
“Look at his attitude,” Judd said. “What’s being done here? What’s hidden here? Why not comply with our requests?”
“You don’t have a legitimate request,” Tyler said. “I run a construction business. Do you think I would do anything to compromise myself or my business?”
“Who knows what your family is capable of,” Judd said.
The anger hit me so hard I started to cry.
If I didn’t cry, I would have attacked someone.
Silas shook himself free of Teddy’s weak grip.
He wrapped his arms around me.
“Are you happy now?” Silas asked. “I bought this house with my money. My hard-earned money. Mila is pregnant with our child and I wanted to give her a house. This is my family’s home now.”
“I have everything under control,” Tyler said. “You have no right to be here. We’re not selling this house. This land. Nothing. You want to get lawyers involved, then do it.”
“I promise you, I won’t run out of money,” Silas said. “Trust me. I’ll write another song, sell it for millions, and keep fighting. My family will be in this house. And if you don’t leave, I’ll call the cops.”
“I am the cops,” Teddy said.
“I’ll call a cop who will do something,” Silas said.
I squeezed my eyes shut and cried.
This was the moment when I wished more than ever my father was still alive. He’d know what to do here. He’d know who to call, what to say, and he’d get this worked out. More than that, why wasn’t my father here with us anyway? Why wasn’t he here to see me pregnant? To see Olivia pregnant? He would have loved Olivia. He would have goofed off with her to annoy Tyler. And with Silas… oh, he would have taken to Silas in a heartbeat. Knowing Dad, he’d have Silas teaching him guitar, wanting to play a show at Max’s bar.
Silas held me as the tension continued to mount.
“Anything else here?” Teddy asked.
“I’ll be digging around,” Judd said. “Reporting what I find to the mayor. Just to make sure everything is okay with this property. This house. And, of course, any and all permits.”
“I look forward to reviewing your findings,” Jefferson said with a grin as he spoke to Judd.
“And there will always be an offer on the table,” John said. “Before you get yourself in too deep here.”
“This conversation is over,” Silas said.
“Come on, that’s enough,” Teddy said.
He ushered the three men away from the house.
I looked up at Silas.
He touched my face.
“I’m so sorry, darling,” Silas whispered.
“No. I’m sorry. For everything, Silas. I’m sorry things are like this with my family and others.”
“We’re going to be okay, Mila. Fuck those guys. I won’t back down.”
“Fuck!” Tyler yelled.
He kicked the wooden railing and one of the old spokes cracked.
“I’ll fix that for free,” he said. “I better go check on Lucy. I’m glad she listened to me and
