It's Complicated - J. S. Cooper Page 0,58

blow this for me? I didn’t need him feeling pressured by my friends.

“What? It’s good to know what he’s actually looking for, right?” Sarah shrugged and looked over at Lucas. “So what are you looking for, Lucas?”

“Wow. So I guess we’re getting right to the nitty-gritty,” he said over a laugh. “I don’t know what to say here.” He looked over at me and then he smiled warmly. “It’s okay, Gemma. No need to be worried. I’m glad you have friends that have your best interests at heart. I mean, what can I say? I didn’t actually sign up for the app myself. My grandmother signed me up. She actually signed up my brother and I because she wants to see us fall in love and get married and all that great stuff. I’ve dated a lot in the past. However, I work a lot and I enjoy my job and that keeps me busy. I’m looking for someone that can enjoy life with me, you know, the finer pleasures that exist. Though, I’m also looking for a woman that has a little bit of an edgy side to her.”

“What do you mean by edgy side?” Sarah said, confused. I was glad she’d asked because that was something I did want the answer to. “Like motorbikes and stuff?” She prodded.

“Do you ride motorbikes?” I looked over at Lucas with a frown. “I didn’t know that.”

“No. When I say edgy, I don’t mean motorbikes. I mean someone that likes to explore, experiment, is open to trying new things.”

“What sort of new things?” Harry said. He was now getting into the conversation.

“I don’t know exactly, maybe in the bedroom, out of the bedroom, you know, different adventures, maybe skydiving, thrill-seeking stuff, bungee jumping.”

“Well, if you want me to go bungee jumping, that’s never going to happen,” I laughed. “I have an extreme fear of heights and there’s no way I would willingly jump off anything with a rope attached to my ankle. There’s just no way.”

“Well, you never know,” he said. “Is there really absolutely no way? I feel like there’s always a possibility for something to happen.”

“Really?” I looked at him. “What do you mean by that exactly?”

“I just mean that, out of all the things in the world that there are for human beings to do, I think there is absolutely nothing that is off-limits to anyone.”

“What do you mean by that?” Harry said.

“I just mean that no matter what someone says they will or wouldn’t do, there’s always a situation in which they would do something.”

“I would never kill anyone,” Sarah said. “There’s no situation in which...”

“Hold on,” Lucas said with a grin. “Let me give you this scenario.”

“Okay.”

“What if you were in an airplane crash on a mountain range...”

“Okaaay and?”

“And one of the passengers was basically half dead. You knew they wouldn’t survive and they are in tremendous pain. The best way you could help them would be to shoot them and kill them so that they were out of the pain quicker. What would you do?”

“Well, I mean, that’s a different situation because...” Sarah made a face.

“No, no, no. It would still be murder. Maybe you would like to call it euthanasia, but isn’t euthanasia just a polite way of saying murder?”

“Yes, I would most probably kill them, I mean, if they were in a lot of pain, but I’m doing it because...”

“We’re not looking at the reasons why you’re doing it. We’re looking to see if you would do it or not. Would you do it?”

“Yeah, I guess I would do it,” Sarah nodded, “but I mean, it’s not like I would just go out in the street and murder someone just for fun.”

“Yeah. And I’m not saying that you would. I’m not saying any two given situations are the same, but there’s always a situation in which you would do something. You just don’t know what it is yet.”

“That’s very true,” Harry said with a nod. “Very astute. I like this guy.” He looked over at me. “Seems like a good match for you, Gemma, even though he might be a little bit more intelligent than you.”

“Ha, ha, very funny, Harry,” I rolled my eyes. I looked over at Sarah who was shaking her head and poking Harry in the side. “Be nice,” she said to him.

“He’s incapable of being nice,” I said, and then looked over at Lucas. “Harry is Sarah’s best friend. They’ve been best friends since they were kids and he’s a
