It's Complicated - J. S. Cooper Page 0,134

they kind of want to meet the guy I’ve been dating. And well ... “

“You told them about me?” He looked happy.

“Kind of not.” I laughed. “I kind of told them I was dating someone and I think I actually said Lucas’s name.”

“Oh no you didn’t.” He grinned. “What are they going to say when they meet my brother Lucas?”

“Oh shit. I didn’t even think about that. Oh no, what am I going to do?” I buried my head in his chest and he stroked my hair.

He was chuckling. “Don’t worry, Gemma. We’ll figure it out. You can just tell them you were joking or whatever.”

“Yeah, you don’t know my family. They’re not going to believe I was joking about anything.”

“I’d love to meet them though. Are they going to be super-hardcore?”

“Yeah. So actually.” I paused. “Maybe next weekend, not such a good time.”

“Why not? You just said ... “

“But I remember when you met Sarah and Harry and well, they overwhelmed you. And if Sarah and Harry overwhelmed you, my family is going to bombard you and make you wish you were never born.”

“Oh Gemma. Trust me, I can deal with your family. I love you. I want to meet them. I want to get to know the people that made you who you are.”

“That’s actually why I came tonight.” I smiled at him.

“Oh?”

“Yeah, I wanted to meet your parents. I wanted to see the two people that molded you into who you were. I guess great minds think alike, huh?”

He kissed my forehead. “Yeah, I guess so. So do you want to go and meet them now then?” he said softly.

“Okay.” I nodded and we got off of the bed and walked toward the door. I took a deep breath. “Oh my God, I’m so nervous right now. I just do not know what I’m going to say ... “

“Gemma, I’ll be here by your side. Trust me, no one’s going to say anything to you.”

“Well, you don’t know if Lucas is going to say anything to me.” I made a face. “I mean, he didn’t exactly sound too happy just now when he made his comments.”

“He’s just jealous that I got the girl and he got nothing.” Connor shook his head. “Tough luck. I know on paper he sounded like the right guy for you, Gemma. But trust me, even if I didn’t exist, he wasn’t the right guy.”

“Well, if you didn’t exist, who would be the right guy?”

“Well, I do exist, so you never have to worry about that.” He kissed me on the lips. “Come on, let’s go downstairs.” He opened the door and held my hand and we walked along the landing to the staircase.

I could feel my nerves racing again. As happy as I was to be with Connor, I was not excited to meet the people at the party or to look his mom in the face again. I’m sure she had to be suspicious that something was up when both of her sons had come up to me and questioned how I knew the other one and then I’d fainted. And I didn’t even think my acting was that good. We walked down the staircase and at the bottom of the stairs stood Lucas with a beautiful redhead. He seemed to be flirting, and I had to admit that I gave myself a little chuckle. He wasn’t in love with me. He didn’t even really care about me if he moved on this quickly. What an asshole. Not that I cared. In fact, I was quite happy. If he moved on quickly, he wouldn’t be worried about me and Connor.

His eyes turned to look at me as we made it to the bottom of the stairs, and he gave me a once-over and just shook his head. I offered him a weak smile, but he didn’t respond back with one. Connor led me past his brother without even glancing at him, and we walked down a small corridor. We entered a large room which appeared to be the living room. There were at least twenty people standing around drinking and laughing. I saw his mother standing by the fireplace with a tall, handsome gentleman that looked like Lucas. We headed over and I took a deep breath.

“Mom, Dad, I’d like you to meet Gemma.”

“Ah, Gemma,” his mom said with a small smile. “How are you feeling, my dear?”

“I’m fine, thank you. I guess I was just a little faint, I didn’t
