“About two hours,” he said. “I can’t wait for you to see.”
Connor was a little bit incorrect. We got there about an hour and forty-five minutes later. And as we drove up to the small wooden cabin, I could feel my jaw dropping. It was beautiful, nothing like I had ever seen before in my life. It sat at the side of a lake, and there were trees all around.
“Wow,” I said as I looked up at the night sky, the stars glittering down on us. “This is beautiful.”
“Right?” he said with a grin. “Come on, let’s go inside.”
“You own this cabin?” I said in surprise.
“Yeah.” He laughed. “When my grandparents died, they left my brother and me a small inheritance. My brother bought a place in the city, fancy apartment, but I decided to use my money to get this cabin.” He shrugged. “I don’t know. I just love it here, you know?”
“It really is beautiful,” I said as we walked up to the front door.
He opened the door and we walked inside. It was small and cozy, and I could tell that there weren’t many rooms. To the right was a small living room with a grand fireplace. There was a comfortable couch leaning against the wall. Behind the couch, I could see an open-plan little kitchen with an oven, a sink, and a big window that must have looked over the back yard. To the left, there was a little hallway. I walked ahead, not waiting for him to show me around, went down the hallway, and I saw a big bedroom, and off the bedroom was a bathroom. It was small, but beautiful.
“I love it,” I said as he came up behind me. “It’s amazing.”
“It really is,” he said, yet his eyes never left mine. I almost felt like he was talking about me.
“So, what’s at the back?” I said as I walked past him, my heart racing erratically. I wasn’t ready for whatever was going to happen, because I knew something was going to happen.
“At the back is just more trees,” he said. “I have some chairs. In the summer, I sit back there. Sometimes, I’ll see foxes. I’ve even seen a bear.”
“Oh no. There’s not going to be bears there tonight, are there?” I looked at him nervously.
“I think they’re hibernating now. Don’t worry.” He rubbed my back. “Plus I’m here to protect you.”
“Oh, you’re my big strong man going to protect me, eh?” I turned around, and he laughed, gathering me into his arms and kissing me on the lips softly.
“Yeah. I’m your big strong man all right.” His hands slid down and cupped my ass and squeezed. I moaned against his lips.
“Um. So, Connor,” I said, trying to think of something to say.
“Yes, Gemma?”

“Are you cold?” he said, as he roped the side of my arms with both of his warm hands. “I’ll keep you warm.”
“I’m not cold.” I shook my head. “I just thought it might be nice to give some ambiance or something to the cabin.”
“Sure,” he said. “We can light a fire. I’ve got some logs at the back. I can bring them in, kindle them.” He didn’t move.
“Yeah. Let’s do that,” I said breathlessly. I didn’t know what to say.
He chuckled as he stepped back. “Don’t worry, Gemma. I’m a patient guy. I take my time.” And with that, he walked out the back.
I stood there, not knowing what to think or feel. I ran my hands through my hair and took a deep breath. I shouldn’t have come. There was no way this was going to be platonic.
