be a stepdad, you can’t do stuff like that.”
“I know.” He nodded.
I smiled. I was so proud of him.
“You know I meant what I said earlier, about having a baby. I do want to have a baby.” He told me.
“I’m a little too old to be having a baby.”
“But not too old, right?” He looked hopeful.
“Maybe.” I tried to think of anyone my age who had a baby.
“Would you be willing to try?”
I couldn’t help but smile. I could tell he really wanted this. “I thought you didn’t want babies,” I teased.
“I do with you. I never wanted a lot of things before I met you.”
“We can try, but please understand that it might be hard for us to conceive. We are both older than forty.”
“But we can try?”
“Yes, we can try.”
His face lit up like Christmas lights. He couldn’t keep the smile off his face. “Thank you! I love you so much. I swear if you asked me two hours ago if I was happy, the answer would have been a definite no, but if you ask me right now, I am the happiest I have ever been in my life.
“We need to also make another decision.”
“Like what?”
“Phantom. I don’t want you to quit. It is a part of you.”
“But I know how you feel about me being on the road.”
“But you were right. I should trust you. You’ve never given me a reason to doubt you.”
“Look, I understand where you’re coming from. Jealousy is a bitch.”
“When have you ever been jealous?”
“Tate! I was totally jealous of you and Tate and how you two used to flirt.”
I looked away.
“Beth?”
“It was my fault, you know. You were right. I looked like I was flirting with him and I led him on. I honestly didn’t mean to do it. He was nice to me, and I didn’t think being mean to him would help our situation, ya know?”
“Beth…it was not your fault. He did it to hurt me. So if we have to lay blame, it’s on me. Okay?”
“No, let’s agree to lay blame where it belongs, on him. Can we agree to that?”
“Of course.” He leaned in and grabbed my face. He kissed me softly. “You know, with your depression, it probably wouldn’t hurt if we both go to therapy to deal with the kidnapping. I know I still have nightmares about what Tate and Jason did to you. I know you must have them too,” he whispered.
“I think that would be a good idea,” I admitted.
“Good, we will look for a psychiatrist after the wedding.” He smiled.
“About Phantom, I can’t let you quit.” I had to make him agree to this.
“I talked to Berg about some options with the band. We will go over everything and pick which one works best for both of us. But I promise you this: you and Joey will come before Phantom always! I mean that.”
I looked into his eyes and I almost started to cry. This was my dream come true; he was my dream come true. He could see I was going to start crying so he kissed me.
“Now! Wedding! We need to get married.” He smiled.
“You’re in such a hurry. You would think you had already knocked me up or something.” I smiled back at him.
“I want to practice on knocking you up, so we need to get hitched. Do you want to go to a chapel? Bring Joey? I will not have sex with you until we’re married. I have a reputation to uphold, you know.”
“Really?” I leaned in and kissed him.
He pulled me flush against him and I felt him hard in his jeans. I started dry humping his lap as though I was a fifteen year old. His hand went to the back of my head to hold me in place so he could kiss me harder.
His phone rang, but he ignored it. I, on the other hand, was feeling playful so I pulled his phone out of his back pocket. The screen flashed Berg, and there was a picture of Berg, looking as though he was trapped in the phone. Neat. I pulled away and held the phone to his face. Roman was breathing heavily. He gave me a scolding look and answered his phone.
He hit the speaker button. “Hello?”
“Did you get the girl?”
I grinned, thinking they had talked about me.
“Yup, I got the girl. Girl, say hi to my best friend, Berg.”
“Hi, Berg,” I said into the speaker.
“Hi, girl.” Berg laughed. “You took pity on my
