Getting the Axe - Nikki Mays Page 0,38

smile. “Oh, no reason really.” She gives a little shrug.

“Come on tiny one,” Mason says. “You have to know that none of us are scared of you.” He looks over at me with an obnoxious smirk. “Well, maybe Noah, but even then you’re only scaring his balls that don’t want to go back to being blue.”

I watch her lips twitch to that one, The damn traitor. “I know that you guys aren’t scared of me.”

Ben gives her a smile. “But?”

“But,” Her smile is so wide it’s actually scary. “I’m sure that it would be horrible if your mother thought that you three were upsetting me.” I can feel my eyes narrow and can see my brothers do the same. “I mean, gosh, she would probably come here every day just to make sure that you were being super duper nice to me at all times.” She sing songs like an evil canary.

The three of us sit here eyeing the woman who looks the last person in this world who could ever be frightening. She literally has on a bright pink t-shirt that says “gimme some sugar” with candy all around it, jeans, and pink converses for fuck’s sake. She even has donuts as earrings today. And yet, besides my mother, she has just become the most terrifying woman that I’ve ever met.

“You really want to go down that road, Eleanor?” Mason growls using her real name. None of us miss the scathing look he receives in return.

“Vroom vroom buddy.” She quips. “It’d be even worse if she never gave you dessert at Sunday dinners, huh?” She taps her right index finger to her, you guessed it, pink lips, and pretends to be really thinking hard. “That would just be awful, wouldn’t it?”

Ben starts laughing as Mason begins to tap his fingers against his desk while glaring at the tiny woman seemingly in control of all of us.

She looks over at Ben with a raised eyebrow. “Imagine the mischief that your momma can cause for you, especially with a pregnant woman at home.” The smile on his face dies, being replaced with a frown.

“I don’t like this, Elle,” Ben grumbles. “You need to break up with Noah. He’s obviously bad for you. His assholeness is rubbing off.”

Mason sits forward in his chair. “Speaking of Noah,” He looks over at me with a glare. “Why aren’t you threatening him at all. He is the biggest jackass out of all of us.”

He’s not wrong, but damn. “Thanks.” I mutter.

Elle looks at me with a serene smile before looking back at Mason. “Like you said,” She shrugs casually. “His balls don’t want to be blue ever again.”

Mason’s mouth drops open. “Seriously, what happened to sweet and shy little Elle?”

She rolls her eyes and stands up from her desk. “I was never shy, you big dope. Acting properly and being shy are two totally different things.”

“Fair point.” He mutters before pretending that he’s looking at something on his computer screen.

Elle walks over to me and gives me a brief peck on the lips. “I’ll be back. I’ve got a few questions for some of the guys because I know that the jerk at the supply company is wrong.”

“Have fun,” I smirk as she walks out of the office with determination written all over her face.

I shake my head and smile as I get back to working up a new proposal for a new developer that wants to build a bunch of houses in a gated community. Personally, I think that’s a bit overkill in this area, but whatever. Rich people never seem to have a problem burning some cash if it makes them feel superior to others. I continue making sure that everything is in order before I send it out. Nothing worse than looking incompetent because I didn’t take an extra few minutes to look everything over.

However, I can feel two sets of eyes boring a hole into my skull. “What?” I ask without even looking up.

“So, everything is going well with you two, huh?” Ben asks.

“Yup.”

“Good, that’s good.”

“Just spit it out, some of us are actually busy.” I bark. I may be happy these days, but I’m never going to completely change.

“You need to fuck the evil out of her,” Mason states boldly, whereas Ben was at least trying for tact.

I look over at him with a bland expression. “What was that?”

“You need it.” He starts.

I hold up my hand to stop him. “I heard you the first time, but I figured that
