Getting the Axe - Nikki Mays Page 0,37
to burn in my stomach, I understood what he was saying. Their parents were worthless, and they only had themselves. I grit my teeth every time I think about what they must have gone through over the years. It’s still mind-boggling how they are both such caring and genuine people. They will both go out of their way to help anyone in need and ask for absolutely nothing in return.
Once again proving what a complete and utter jackass I was. I swear that I will spend the rest of my life trying to be good enough for her, even if I never come close.
“Arrrrgh.” Comes from the woman who owns my soul and doesn’t even realize it. “Stupid, annoying butthead.”
Mason walks into the office at that very second. “Damn Noah, what did you do now? I thought for sure that you would stop pissing her off once you convinced her to take a chance on your ugly ass.” He chirps before sitting at his desk, much to Ben’s amusement.
Elle looks over at him and rolls her eyes. “I’m not talking about that butthead.” She tilts her pen at me, making everyone but me chuckle. “I was talking about the butthead at the supply company.”
“Butthead?” I question slowly.
She looks over at me with a glare that wouldn’t scare a puppy. “Yes, you’re a butthead too. I fell into the toilet again last night, Noah!” She hisses, making my brothers laugh. “Do you have any idea how unpleasant that is? Hmmm?” She questions but doesn’t wait for my reply. “It’s extremely unpleasant. Seriously, how difficult is it to put the dang toilet seat down when you’re done?”
This has been a constant argument since we’ve gotten together. It’s not my fault that I’m used to living alone. “Probably about as difficult as it is to check to make sure that it’s down before you sit.”
We may be happy together, but that doesn’t mean that everything about us has changed. Apparently, bickering is just a habit that we can’t seem to break. Not that either of us tries very hard, but oh well.
Her eyes turn into these tiny little death glares that make it extremely difficult not to smile. She’s so damn cute when she’s mad. Not that I’ll ever tell her that. She’s already stabbed me once. No need for a repeat. “You’re supposed to put it back down when you’re finished, No-ah.” She says slowly in her version of a growl.
My brother’s “coughing” is not helping me keep a straight face.
“Says who?” I counter.
“Gravity!” She shouts. “Gravity says that what goes up must come down!”
“And yet it stays up.” I drawl, unable to help myself. I’m going to hell, I know that I am, but damn if it isn’t fun to get her all riled up.
Mason snorted so hard that some of the water he was drinking just shot out of his nose. Ben looks like he is convulsing and I’m literally jabbing myself in the leg with a letter opener to keep a straight face.
Elle turns her head creepily to look at Mason. “Serves you right.” She hisses at him. “Too bad you weren’t drinking soda.”
“Ouch.” He chuckles while lifting his hands to his heart. “Where did our sweet and kind Elle go? Who is this evil woman wishing me pain?” He tries to pout and look sad, but fails miserably.
“She’s been stuck with all of you boneheads for months now.” She grouches. “The three of you could drive anyone crazy.”
“Now is that any way to talk to three of your bosses?” Ben questions in mock seriousness.
Mason nods his head. “I mean sure, you’re sleeping with one out of the three. But damn, two of us can write you up.”
“I’ll be worried about that when you figure out how to actually do a write-up.” She sasses automatically.
“I knew that she’s been doing them for you.” Ben and I say in unison.
Mase holds his hands up in surrender. “Hey now, we’re talking about our insubordinate employee, not me.”
“You three do not want to start with me today.” She says mildly. Just a tad too calmly. Enough that all three of us tilt our heads and look at her.
I look at both of my brothers who don’t seem to want to ask, so I do. “And why’s that?” I add in a smirk just to irk her more. I know damn well that she purposely rolls those pretty eyes just to annoy me most days.
She looks at me with a fake ass bright
