Into the Fray (Daring Escapes #3) - Margaret Daley Page 0,57
added, “They’ve parked where Juan works.”
“That place holds half of the government. We need to speed up and see if we can follow them inside. I don’t think you should go into the building. The thugs probably know your part in this, but they won’t know I’m involved. I’ll give you a call if they go into an office.”
Guerrero ground his teeth together as Bob parked in a place that gave him a good vantage point for surveillance, only two rows away from the assailants’ vehicle. The two goons entered the office building as Bob exited his car. Guerrero’s stomach tightened. He had to force deep breaths into his lungs. He wanted to be with Bob, but if his friend could make it on the elevator the two used, it would really help narrow down whom they were going to visit.
Two minutes later, Bob called him.
Guerrero quickly answered. “Who is it?”
“Senor Sauto’s office.”
“I’ll be right there. I’ll use the stairs.” Guerrero left Bob’s car, jogged toward another entrance in the back of the government building, and used the stairs to the fourth floor. He and Tory had given the gold artifacts to the interior secretary. Was that why a shipment was leaving Puerto Sierra?
When he reached the fourth floor where Senor Sauto’s office was, Bob was waiting for him. “How long have they been inside?”
“Ten minutes.” His friend kept his gaze on the door.
Guerrero remained hidden around the corner. “We need to stay here and see who goes in and out of the office. It’s possible the thugs are getting the artifacts for the shipment leaving the country. I wish we had a way to hear what’s being said.”
“Sure would make it easier. At least we can track their next location when they leave here.”
Twenty minutes ticked away. Guerrero’s tension caused his breathing to become shallow. What if there was another team out there searching for Ramon, Juan, and Tory? He hated not being at the shack with her to make sure she was protected, but he had to find out who was involved, or she never would be safe.
The door swung open and the two killers left Sauto’s office. Guerrero started for the staircase, but Bob stopped him.
“We have the tracker. We need to see who else was in the office,” Bob said after the elevator doors closed. “You can’t go in there, but I can.”
Guerrero nodded.
His friend walked down the hall and went inside. A minute later, the elevator opened onto the fourth floor, and Senor Sauto hurried toward his office. Who had the two assailants talked to? It wasn’t the head of the Department of the Interior, so who? The only one he could think of was Carlos Lopez, Sauto’s assistant.
Bob returned. “Lopez was the only one in the office. When Sauto entered the reception area, all he did was tell his assistant to hold his calls. Sauto looked upset. I told Lopez I’d call tomorrow to set up a time to meet with Sauto about a DEA issue.”
Guerrero checked the tracker. “We need to leave and see where they go.”
“Do you know what kind of cars Sauto and Lopez drive?”
“Sauto, yes. Lopez, no.”
“Good. Let’s go. I have a couple more tracking devices in my car.” Bob smiled. “Like I’ve always said, you never know when you might need to follow a person of interest.” He made a call and discovered what type of vehicle Lopez drove.
They quickly left by the staircase out into the rear parking spaces for the government workers inside the building. When Bob located each vehicle, Guerrero asked, “I know what Sauto drives but not Lopez. Are you sure that’s his? This four-wheel drive is top of its line. Where did the money come from to purchase this?”
“Good question. He came from a low-income family. But my source I just called is a good one.”
As they left the back parking lot, Guerrero paused. “It sounds like you have a large source network?”
“I find it helps me when I know who the top officials are as well as their staff.”
Guerrero gave Bob instructions to follow Lopez while keeping an eye on where Sauto was going. It appeared the minister of the interior was driving toward his own home. As they left the capital, Guerrero’s grip on the phone following the tracking device strengthened as though he could crush it.
“Lopez is heading toward Juan’s house. Why? What did those two assailants tell him that caused him to leave right after Sauto left?”
“To search Juan’s home?”
“Maybe.
