Into the Fray (Daring Escapes #3) - Margaret Daley Page 0,56

front of the shack, Tory approached the place with trepidation. However, it shouldn’t be worse than living in a tent for months. She opened the door and batted away a cobweb. She quickly looked for the spider that spun it but couldn’t find it. As she moved further inside, she scanned the place and felt better when she saw the cots with what looked like clean sheets, and the surfaces were dust free. There was only one door and two small windows. The fireplace had a stack of logs, ready to be burned, with a pot hanging from an iron rod that could swing over the fire.

“You’re right about bare necessities, but we’ll take it,” Juan said as he walked past Tory with Ramon, still bound, next to him.

She looked over her shoulder at Guerrero who was talking with Bob. When Guerrero left his friend, he approached Tory and stopped a few inches away from her.

In a low voice, he said, “I’m going with Bob first to see if anyone is still at Juan’s house. Then we’re going to talk to the professor. We need answers. There isn’t any cell service out here. But there is about a mile toward the capital.” Guerrero pointed in the right direction. “Don’t leave Ramon alone. I’ll be tying him up to a chair. Meanwhile, Bob says there’s a place in the jungle he’ll show you and Juan. You can hide there if you need to. Be cautious. I don’t know if Ramon’s story is true or not. We can’t trust him, but I’ll be checking out Molina.” He leaned close and whispered into her ear, “Please follow my directions. I don’t want anything to happen to you.” Then he kissed her earlobe before he headed forward to take care of Ramon.

Tory leaned back against the door, her legs weak from the brief kiss Guerrero had given her. She wanted more. What if something happened to him while he was gone? Lord, please be with Guerrero and lead him to the answers we need.

All she could do right now was pray, but that empowered her. God was with them.

Chapter Twelve

After checking to see if anyone was at Juan’s house, Guerrero and Bob drove to the professor’s home. They used the vegetation to hide their presence at the home of Santiago Molina. Two thugs stood on the front porch and rang the bell. The professor answered the door, started to smile, but the man, no more than five feet eight inches tall, lifted his hand and fired his weapon with a silencer at Molina’s chest. As the professor started to crumble onto the tiles, the larger assailant kept him propped up against the killer’s chest as the two guys went inside, slamming the door.

“I’ve got an idea.” Bob dug into his pocket and produced a tracking device. He ran toward their vehicle and planted it under the rear bumper.

His friend barely made it back when the two attackers came outside, carrying a laptop. “I see you still believe in carrying a tracking device with you wherever you go,” Guerrero teased his old partner.

“Part of the job. I have several. I never know when I’ll get an opportunity like this.”

Guerrero chuckled. “Some things never change. Let’s follow it. Maybe we’ll get lucky.”

“If this doesn’t lead us anywhere, we can come back here and search Molina’s place.”

“That’s if no one reports his death. We’ve triggered someone. We may not have much time.”

“I don’t blame you, especially if Anna’s murder is tied to the Temple of the Stars. You’ve been trying to find the answers since that night.”

“And nothing we found panned out.” Guerrero balled his hands, wishing he could pound something to release the anger that had consumed him for three years. He didn’t see how he could move on with his life without closure. He’d tried that, and it hadn’t given him any peace.

Bob passed his phone to Guerrero. “Let me know where to go.”

“So far, the two are heading into the capital. At least they aren’t hunting for Tory, Juan, and Ramon. If they are, they’re going in the opposite direction.” Guerrero relaxed his tight grip. He prayed they stayed safe.

“Ramon was compromised by the professor. With Ramon missing, do you think they’re tying up loose ends?”

“Yes, unless whoever is behind this is dumb. And I don’t think that.” Guerrero looked at the moving blinking light. “The car is driving toward the center of the city where the government buildings are.” Five minutes later, he
