of it. ?It is my job to provide for you and also to protect you and to love you.?
Jane wasn?t sure what to say to his comment. While finding out that Dirk was her mate hadn?t created an instant love between them, it had created a need to be together and Jane was happy that it had turned out that Dirk was her mate because she was sure that she could love him, she knew without a doubt that she would. The way he touched her, held her, spoke to her, those things created butterflies in her stomach and made her heart race. Maybe she was already beginning to fall in love with him. How odd that she?d found her mate only hours ago and was already feeling this way. But he was her mate, the other half of her soul. He had been created for only her. He was destined to be her companion in this life and he?d be the one who journeyed with her onto the next. How could she not fall for him? She?d been searching for him her entire life. She?d known all along that he was out there and had been awaiting him, she just couldn?t remember most of the wait.
She watched as Dirk placed the dish in her lap and pulled off the cover. She gasped when she saw what was underneath. It was heart-shaped pancakes, ham cut into the shape of a heart and somehow, he?d managed to cut fried eggs into a heart. She felt tears gather in her eyes and she smiled at him, trying to blink them away. All this time she?d felt like she was alone. She hadn?t truly been alone. He?d been with her, helping her and looking out for her. Most importantly, she?d never be alone again. She knew that he?d always be there. ?Thank you,? she murmured, ?I almost hate to eat it.?
Dirk smiled at her and said, ?I wish I could say that causing that smile on your face was my only reason for doing this, but I have to admit that I had other motives.?
Jane raised an eyebrow in question, although she still smiled at him.
?The greedy wolf in me wants everyone to know that you are mine. I knew that when I asked to use the kitchen to prepare this meal for my mate, the women who work down there would be gossiping to everyone that the pack Delta has found his mate and word would soon get around to the other males of the pack that you are taken. I hope you aren?t cross with me. That wasn?t my reason for bringing you breakfast, I?d already planned to when the idea came to me.?
Jane smiled knowingly and shook her head, ?No I?m not angry with you. I am proud that you want everyone to know that I am your mate and I understand the need. I find myself wanting to stake claim to you as well.?
Dirk picked up a fork from the tray and cut off a piece of the ham, then held it to her mouth. Jane ignored the little voice in her head that was screaming that she wasn?t a child and opened her mouth to taste the ham. She was delighted when the taste of it hit her mouth. ?Did you really cook this?? she asked once she?d swallowed.
Dirk nodded, ?Yes. Do you like it??
Jane smiled and nodded, ?Yes it?s very good.? She picked up another fork from the tray and cut off a piece, feeding it to him as he had her.
Dirk smiled smugly and said, ?I am a fine chef.?
Jane laughed at him a moment until he fed her a fork full of pancakes.
She found it odd that he?d brought two forks but assumed that this must have been his intention. So she allowed him to feed her breakfast and she did the same, sharing it with him and feeding him just as he did her. She felt a little silly, but she ignored the feeling and just simply enjoyed having a mate that wanted to take care of her. She also had to admit that she liked the way he looked at her every time she gave him a bite.
When she couldn?t eat any more, she held her hand up to stop Dirk. ?I?ve already ate more than my fill. It tastes so good that if I don?t stop myself, I?m going to be sick.?
Dirk laughed and said, ?If you?re finished, then why don?t you
