Fight, Jamiee - Ellie R. Hunter Page 0,40

my teeth, deciding to jump in the shower to freshen up. Freddie’s still not back when I’m finished, so I decide to throw on some clothes and go in search of him.

I don’t have to go far. I hear the television when I reach the bottom of the stairs, Deacon’s voice filling the silence in the house.

Numbly, I walk through the foyer and stand in the doorway to the living room. Everyone but Baz is congregated on the large sectional sofa, watching Deacon give an interview on the TV.

“There haven’t been any charges brought against you. Can you tell us the truth about what happened between you and Miss Coleman?” the reporter asks him, and I step farther into the room to listen.

“We’ve been arguing for a while. A lot of stress was put on us because her brother doesn’t like me. He didn’t approve of our relationship, and Jamiee found it hard to be happy. The friction between her brother’s band and mine weighed her down, and eventually came between us. I suggested we take a break, and she lost her mind. I had a show that night and left the hotel. When I got back, she was gone, and I later found out she made these false allegations against me. I haven’t been charged because there’s nothing to be charged over.”

What a load of bullshit!

He’s smooth, playing anyone watching this. He knows what he did, and nothing can take that away from me. I don’t need the world to believe the truth like he needs them to believe his lies.

“Do you still love her?”

I roll my eyes.

“Of course I do, I’ll always love her. She’s a special person, and I hope she finds the happiness she deserves. I’ll always be sorry I wasn’t the one she could find that with.”

Damon snorts, and Alice says quietly, “I’ll never understand how someone can hurt the person they profess to love.”

“He never loved her,” Freddie snaps.

The reporter is eating up every word, and I sigh. Freddie’s head whips around hearing me, and quickly turns the television off.

“How long have you been standing there?” he asks, moving around the sofa to come to me.

“Long enough to hear his bullshit.”

“You need to call your lawyer and find out what’s going on,” Damon cuts in.

“Well, we know he hasn’t been charged. He’ll get away with it, so what’s the point?”

Alice is the one who crosses the room and takes hold of my hand, bumping Freddie out of her way.

“There’s every point. This was one interview, and he lied through his teeth. The world should know that.”

“He played it good on there. They’ll already believe him.”

“That may be, but at least you’ll know you did what you could. He’ll meet someone else and hurt them like he did you, and when they come forward to tell the world, they’ll believe then. It might take a while, but it will happen. But, in the meantime, you have us who believe you, and that’s what counts.”

Bless her for trying, but I can’t deal with this now.

“I’ll think about it,” I tell her, because I will—at some point. “Anyway, I’m starving. Is breakfast ready?” I ask Freddie over her shoulder, making the point I’m purposefully moving on.

“Yeah. I was about to bring it up when Damon called me through.”

He’s calm—far too calm after hearing the lies. It has to be a good sign, right?

I leave them in the living room and find two plates of bacon, eggs, and sausages on the counter. Grabbing one, I walk over to the table.

“Anyone who really knows him, will know he’s bullshitting, little Coleman,” River says, joining me at the table.

Digging into the eggs, I stuff my mouth so I don’t have to answer. I’m sick of Deacon being in my life. The more he’s being talked about and I have to deal with him, the more my regret grows. I was the one who used him to play games with Freddie. Perhaps I’ll never be mature enough to hold down a relationship. Maybe I shouldn’t even bother trying.

The guys are down in the studio, so I use the time to call my lawyer. I type his number into my phone and press call. It rings six times before he answers, and I take a deep breath.

“Hi, this is Jamiee Coleman. I’m calling for an update on Deacon’s arrest. I saw him giving an interview on TV earlier, making me out to be a liar.”

Sighing, he informs me, “I heard about the
