right they were for each other, even when I was trying to steal Enzo away for myself.
“Yes, our plan worked.”
My ears perk up at that. Plan? What plan?
“They were gossiping like two schoolgirls and batting eyelashes at each other. I think they are a bit grouchy from lack of sleep. But yes, Rowan said they were willing to die for one another, that they loved one another. They’re planning on working together from now on.”
I can’t believe I’m hearing this. I open my eyes the tiniest of bits to look over at Langston, but he’s still sound asleep.
It was a setup—all of it. They hired Rowan and his team to pretend to kidnap us so Langston and I would be forced to work out our problems.
I’m pissed. I can’t believe they played us like that. Unfortunately, there is nothing I can do about it until we land.
“We need to make a quick stop here to refuel; then we’ll take you on to your house, Langston,” Enzo says before he hops out. Beckett follows, and they both head inside a hangar.
I turn to Langston. “We were set up.”
He yawns. “What are you talking about?”
“Rowan was hired by Enzo and all of your supposed friends to try and push us together.”
He huffs. “You aren’t serious.”
“I am. I overheard Enzo talking to Kai on the phone while you were sleeping.”
“You heard over the sound of the rotor blades while Enzo was talking into his headset?” He raises his eyebrows in disbelief.
“Yes.”
“They would hire someone to kidnap us, torture us, and threaten to kill us—why?”
“Because they are sick of us fighting and playing games like the sex yacht. They thought if we went through a life-threatening ordeal together, it would bring us closer together.”
It worked. We did.
For a second, I think Langston is going to believe me. Then he blinks rapidly and runs his hand through his hair. “That’s crazy.”
“Crazy as me pretending to kill your best friend?”
He narrows his eyes at me.
“Look!” I point into the small hanger that Enzo and Beckett entered. There is a man standing with them for only a second. A man in a suit with sharp-looking hair. He laughs with them then disappears down a hallway.
“That was Rowan,” Langston growls.
“See! I told you they schemed against us.”
“Well, let’s have a little fun in return.” He smirks.
I smile along with him. “What do you have in mind?”
Langston climbs into the front seat and pops a compartment open, pulling out a gun. He hands it to me and then pulls his own gun from his waistband. “Let’s go get justice for our kidnapping.”
My eyes widen. “We aren’t really going to kill Rowan, are we?”
“No, but Enzo and Beckett will think we are going to.”
I smile, liking this plan. “I just wish Kai, Siren, and Zeke were here to see us.”
He thinks a moment. “I think I can arrange that.”
I have no idea what he has planned, but I trust him.
Dammit, I trust him. I trust him with everything, even after our quarrel. No matter if their methods were fucked up, their plan worked. Langston and I are a lot closer now.
We walk casually out of the helicopter with our guns in hand. Enzo and Beckett aren’t paying us any attention as we stroll to the back of the building. Langston pops a door open and holds his gun out. I follow him doing the same, even though I feel like my gun is for show more than anything else. We already know I won’t kill anyone.
We sneak down the hallway before popping into a room where we find Rowan chatting with a pilot.
“Don’t move,” Langston says, aiming the gun at him.
Rowan freezes with terror in his eyes. “Now, calm down. We should talk about things.”
“Talk about what? How you tortured and threatened to kill us? You’re not walking out of here alive,” I say.
Rowan’s face turns pale.
“Mr. Black, will you come in here and explain things a moment?” Rowan shouts.
“You don’t want Enzo. He’ll kill you right away, while I plan on killing you slowly.”
Enzo and Beckett round the corner. To their credit, they don’t give anything away. They assess the situation and wait to see what we will do.
“Who is this man?” Enzo asks.
“The man who kidnapped and tortured us,” I say.
Rowan’s eyes dart to Enzo for help.
“Put your hands behind your back, Rowan,” Langston says.
He complies.
“Here, tie him up with these, Liesel. And if you move an inch while she ties you up, I’ll shoot you in the
