Fake Love - Jaxson Kidman Page 0,34
I looked, I saw a motorcycle approaching.
Well, not a big, growling motorcycle, but a street ride.
There weren’t many guys that had those, which was good. It wasn’t a good look. There were other places around here where that kind of stuff happened.
The rider began to cut left to right, crossing the yellow line on the road.
Just being a complete douchebag.
He flew up on me really fast and I felt a tightness in my chest as I began to panic.
Visions of the night of the accident played through my head.
My hands gripped the wheel tight.
At the last second, I turned to the right.
When I did, the street ride tried to go around me.
I closed my eyes and screamed, picturing Tank Two hitting the street ride, sending the rider through the air. Hitting a tree, breaking his neck, killing him…
I opened my eyes just in time to see the street ride cutting around Tank Two.
His big back tire skidded left to right on the rocks on the side of the road.
He kept his balance and traction.
And he also kicked up a bunch of those rocks.
Hearing the sound of the rocks hitting the passenger side front corner of Tank Two made me cringe. There was a thud or two that didn’t sound good at all.
I let off the gas pedal and coasted to the side of the road.
The street ride was way off in the distance.
I remembered who it was too.
It was fucking Reid.
He always rode like that.
My heart raced the rest of the drive to BFH. A mix of fear and being pissed off. It was going to take me a while to get over the accident. That meant driving was going to be a pain each time someone else did something on the road around me.
After I parked Tank Two, I walked around to the passenger side and curled my lip.
“Fucking asshole,” I growled.
There were little dings in the brand-new paint of the SUV.
I felt like I could cry.
Of all the things that had happened and were happening around me, this was the thing that was going to make me cry?
I put my hand to the mirror and took a deep breath.
“What happened, Winter?”
The voice made me stand up tall.
I took another breath.
It was Xavier.
I slowly turned to face Xavier.
He stared down at me with those intense eyes. Definitely studying me to see if and what I remembered.
He wore another hoodie.
This one was a dark blue color.
It was so sunny and nice out and he always wore a hoodie.
Which was kind of crazy because he had nothing to hide.
I mean, his body was… whew…
I licked my lips.
“Not going to talk to me?” he asked.
“About what?” I asked.
Xavier reached for me.
His hands touched my hips like I was his.
A shiver soared through my body as he moved me out of the way.
He crouched down and touched the side of Tank Two.
“Rocks,” he said. “What happened? Did you go off the road?”
“No,” I said. “No more accidents for me.”
Xavier looked up at me. “That’s good. So what happened?”
“Nothing.”
“This isn’t nothing, Winter.”
“Why does it matter to you?”
Careful, Winter…
Xavier stood up and was back to towering over me.
“You’ve got an attitude toward me,” he said. “Why?”
“I don’t appreciate people showing up to my house unannounced.”
“That’s it?”
“And I tried to give you your hoodie back and you were mean,” I said, sounding childish.
Xavier nodded. “Well, I guess I’m sorry then. Do you want to know why I did that?”
“Why?” I asked.
It’s because you’re an asshole, but you won’t say that to me.
Xavier stepped closer to me. I was pinned between him and Tank Two.
I could smell his hoodie, maybe even his skin.
“I just wanted an excuse to see you again,” he said in a voice that was so smooth.
I exhaled slowly, reminding myself not to fall for this flirty, bad-boy bullshit stuff.
My teeth pressed tight together for a few seconds as he backed away.
“I don’t have your hoodie right now,” I said.
“I didn’t ask for it back yet,” Xavier said. He pointed to Tank Two. “So what happened here?”
“Really? Fine. Reid was riding like an asshole and he scared me. I cut to the side of the road and he did too. I thought I was going to hit and kill him. He made it around me but kicked up some rocks.”
Xavier’s lip curled high into the air. “Reid, huh? Do you remember him?”
“No,” I said.
“How did you know it was him?”
My heart sank.
My lips quivered.
“I saw him… in the hospital room. Then on his ride
