for a few seconds before he smirked again. “What makes you think I’m playing? You’re hot, and I’d definitely date you if given the chance,” Sawyer said and then shrugged before he unwrapped his burger and moaned again. The sound went straight to my cock, and I wondered if that was what he sounded like while having sex? Did he like to top? Switch? Would he let me suck him? I cleared my throat again and took a couple of deep breaths so I could talk.

“It tastes as good as it smells,” I told him. He thought I was hot? He would date me? I told myself that it was bad to date employees. Always.

“If it tastes even half as good as it smells, it’ll be worth it. Thanks for bringing me. I’ll pay you back for mine when we leave.”

I picked up a fry and shook my head. “No. I’m the one who sprung this trip on you. And I suggested dinner first.” Never mind the fact that I’d been trying to figure out how to spend more time with him away from the store.

“Hudson, it’s good to see you again. Missy said you were here,” Carl said from beside us. I smiled, beginning to think that maybe this wasn’t the best place to come to eat.

“Carl, it’s great to see you,” I said but ended it at that. We were eating, and I really wasn’t in the mood to chat with anyone other than Sawyer. “This is Sawyer. We’re on a date and decided to stop here for burgers before we hit the festival.” I hoped that by saying we were on a date, Carl would get the hint and leave us be.

“Yes. That’s what Missy said. You boys enjoy your food. Don’t be strangers so much,” Carl said before he turned and walked off.

“Okay, are they always odd like that?”

“Yes. Missy went to school with my mom, and I think she’s trying to be a surrogate mother or something. I don’t quite understand it really.”

“Ahh, that explains it a little, I guess. Do they not have kids?”

“Oh yeah. They have five. They’re all grown, and every last one of them are married. Several have kids of their own already.”

“So that’s why the matchmaking? She needs to see everyone her kids’ ages married off and having kids?”

“Not sure. She’s always just been like that toward me and Ford.”

“I just put something together,” Sawyer said before taking a bite of his burger and closing his eyes while he chewed. “Oh man, so good,” he mumbled with the burger in his mouth.

“Right? They’re the best around. Aside from the matchmaking craziness, it’s worth it. What did you put together?” I asked. I picked up my own burger and took a big bite. Yep, it beat eggs. Or cereal. Or leftover chili again.

“Your cousin? His name is Ford. And yours is Hudson. Did your family have a thing for car names?”

I started chuckling because it could seem like it. “Not really sure about my mom. She named me Hudson for unknown reasons. Hell, for all I know, it might be my dad’s name.”

“Okay, but Ford’s parents’ excuse?”

“He was conceived in the back of one.” Sawyer stopped chewing and looked at me in shock.

“No shit?”

“Seriously. Uncle Philip had a thing for Ford trucks. You know…plenty of room in the bed for certain…activities,” I said. I shook my head when Sawyer just raised both eyebrows at me. “That’s all we really know though.”

“Well, that’s interesting, I guess. I think that’s probably better than the story with my name. My mom was pissed at my dad for something—not that that’s surprising since he’s an asshole—and she applied for the birth certificate without him.” Sawyer rolled his eyes. “For some reason, my dad hates the name Sawyer. I’ve not ever been able to find out why though. Sadly, it hasn’t won me any points when it comes to him.”

“At least you know why. And I’m sorry your dad is that way. And your brother…he’s interesting.”

Sawyer snorted, which turned into a coughing fit. He coughed a few times before taking a big drink of his drink and then cleared his throat and looked at me.

“My brother isn’t bad, really. He doesn’t have nearly the backbone as I do and still lets our dad call all of the shots—right down to the girl he dated and married. I just didn’t like being in pain anymore and wanted to see the inside of my apartment more than four,
