can do?” I asked as I drove into the town limits of River Forge.

“Just what I’ve been doing. I have a couple of medications I’m taking that help reduce acid. It’s my own damn fault. I’m only twenty-eight and I’m too young for stomach issues and should have known better. I did it to myself, and now I’m all about eating better and taking better care of myself.”

“Probably shouldn’t take you to a fast-food joint, then, huh?”

“Oh yeah you should. Since I’ve been here, and Chris has known about what’s going on, it’s been nothing but bland food since. And by bland, I mean, no salt, no pepper, no nothing. I want a large order of fries and a juicy burger. With cheese. Having a nurse for a best friend and roommate can suck when it comes to them making sure you’re eating only what your doctor recommends.”

I chuckled. I could certainly do that. I turned into the parking lot of one of the local mom-and-pop places. It wasn’t a chain place, and that made it so much better in my opinion.

“Then you need to experience Sheldon’s Burgers,” I said as I put the truck in park.

“Yeah? Is it some hidden secret or something? I’m still a little surprised Chris hasn’t mentioned this town to me yet.”

“No surprise. But it is a local place, and they have the best burgers. And it’s a great place to bring a date. Come on.” I climbed out, wondering if Sawyer caught my slip. By the time I made it to the back of the truck, Sawyer was walking around the bed. We went inside, and I smiled when Sawyer moaned just inside the door.

“Oh that smells so good. I haven’t had a burger since I left Breckenridge, and that was the day the storm hit.”

“Hudson! Where have you been? We’ve not seen you or your cousin in too long,” Missy Sheldon said when she saw us walking up to the counter.

“Hi, Missy. I’ve been busy, and so has Ford. How’s Carl?”

“He’s good. He’s in the back. He’ll want to come out and say hi. You going to introduce me to your date?”

I bit my lip. Did I correct Missy or let her think that Sawyer and I were on a date? I didn’t want her to continue to try to fix me up with every guy that was in here while I was trying to eat. It made everything difficult. A quick glance at the restaurant told me that nope, I wasn’t going to correct her because there were too many men in the restaurant, and she was going to try to set me up if I didn’t have a date.

“This is Sawyer,” I said and put a hand on the middle of his back and gave him what I hoped was a pleading look. Sawyer smirked before he wrapped an arm around my waist and leaned into my side a bit. The move surprised me, but I couldn’t deny that he felt good tucked into my side. If I reached around and pulled him closer, I told myself it was for show and nothing else. Not the fact that I desperately wanted my hands on Sawyer in any way I could get them.

“Sawyer, it’s nice to meet you. I haven’t seen you around before though. How did you two meet?”

Shit. I didn’t think that she’d be so inquisitive. “We met online,” I said. “Can we order? We’re going over to the festival after this,” I said, lying through my teeth.

“Online? Really? That’s not really safe now, is it?” Missy asked. I took a deep breath and held it, trying not to get too upset.

“Festival? There’s a festival?” Sawyer asked.

“Yeah. It’s every night except Mondays from Halloween until the day before Thanksgiving. They have amazing apple cider and all kinds of pumpkin goodies. It was supposed to be a surprise, cutie,” I said as I ran a finger across the side of Sawyer’s cheek. He closed his eyes briefly, and I felt him oh so lightly push his cheek into my finger. His cheek was scratchy, and I couldn’t help but wonder what it would feel like rubbing against my stomach.

“Oh yeah? That sounds like a lot of fun. And maybe we can finish what we started last night?” Sawyer said, and I felt my face turn bright red. Damn. He was good, and now my mind wasn’t thinking about shopping or even eating supper. Nope. It was thinking about finishing what was
