or daggers and by the glint of the blades in the moonlight, I knew it was silver. They swooped down as wolves leaped up, teeth bared. A dragon flew over my head and snatched up a wolf that was next to me, the two twisting in flight as they fought. The forest was set ablaze here and there as the dragons surrounded us with fire. Our Alpha and those of us who could, transformed into our beast forms, to be at our strongest. Only natural born wolves and Alphas could do that under a full moon.
I rose on two feet and leaped into the air, attaching myself to a dragon and sinking my teeth into his cheek where his scales hadn’t fully protected his face. I let my venom flow as he screamed and struggled to throw me off. He flew backward, fast, slamming us both into a tree and I grunted from the impact and pain. We both fell to the ground, only he was dying from the poison I’d injected into him. I looked around, and everyone was moving so fast, just flashes of fur, wings, and fire. So many bodies lay on the ground already.
Again, I ran into the thick of it, coating my claws with my venom and slashing several dragons where their flesh was vulnerable. All around me were snarls, growls, screams, and curses. So much chaos, and I was feeling electrified by the carnage and excitement. I saw another dragon rip through the abdomen of a wolf with his claws. He then picked the wolf up and bit into his side, injecting venom. I charged toward him, but he must have sensed me and dodged my strike enough that my claw only chipped one of his scales. The dragon turned and blew a cloud of fire at me. I leaped back, only my arm catching flame. I smothered the fire before it could consume me, then charged forward again. I snapped at his face, but he grabbed both of my arms, holding me back. He was far stronger than I was and he held me at bay with ease. This dragon gripped my arms tighter, then flew us upward at a speed that was almost dizzying. I’d never flown before and the sensation rattled me a bit. It seemed we would ascend past the clouds if the dragon flew any higher.
“Foolish wolf,” he snarled, then spun me around in the air until he tossed me. My body catapulted uncontrollably, like a rag doll. Panic struck me as I soared over the tops of trees until gravity found me and sent me crashing to the forest floor over two miles from where the battle was taking place.
The impact was explosive as every inch of me felt pain. It disabled me as several bones in my body broke like fine china. I whimpered as I looked down, seeing the white of my bones protruding through my flesh and fur. My leg was twisted in an unnatural state and the femur was splintered and sticking out of shredded flesh. Oh my god, I’d never felt such agony and it was so all-consuming, a wave of nausea rushed over me and I gagged, but managed to keep down my dinner. We didn’t heal as fast as vampires did and it took a few minutes for my body to recover. As I lay there, my bones forming back into place, I felt something shoot through me like lightening, and I cried out. It stung my heart, making it skip a few beats, and weakened me physically. My limbs felt like they’d been drained of all their power. I felt dizzy as I held my hand up and watched in confusion as it shook like a leaf in the wind. The sensation lingered for less than a minute, but it was enough to alarm me. The weakness I’d felt faded away. It was such a strange anomaly and it slowed down my healing. I was glad it didn’t last long. Once I was whole, I rushed back into the fray. I could hear the scream, growls, and snarls dying down as I drew closer. I stopped dead in my tracks when I came upon Connor’s corpse. His head was separated from his body and his blood stained the grass and leaves in a way that was so surreal to me. My mouth dropped open and before I could gasp from the shock, a dragon ran past me, slicing my throat
